Hi there,

Does anyone know of a house intercom system that is run through cat5e structured cabling. Ideally I'm after a 4 station system where any station can call any other station. I'd like, if possible, to have one in the kitchen, one in my office, one out in the workshop and one in the granny flat.

Is there a system like this available?

Try the Farfisa range... supplied by Intek in Auckland. They have a newish two wire system that runs over cat 5 okay... it's a little spendy.

Your other option would to voip phones and an asterisk server.

As you probably know I am a structured cabling fan, but honestly you cannot go past a multihandset DECT setup for flexiblity and naturally integrates with your phone, only catch in your situation is will it make it to the granny flat.

Had a wired intercom in a previous house. Worked fine except I was limited to staying within a meter or so of the intercom.

Have now gone to the multi set phones. Much better. Work anywhere in the house and close neighborhood

Yep I would go DECT anytime, just dont get sucked into non standard DECT solutions, stay with standard 1.8GHz DECT handsets, basic Panasonics are good, you can pickup triple sets for stuff all these days, then just need to get an extra extention, you will probably have to order it on indent as most retailers (DSE etc) dont carry them but Panasonic will supply additional handsets on order.

1.8GHz dect doesnt really have the range I find. The best performing handset by a mile I have tried has been a philips DECT messenger phone. I keep trying to buy more handsets for it on trademe but others want them more than I do.

Its nice in that the PSTN base is not built into one of the charging bases, and if you have an old XP machine around you can plug it into that and voice chat your messenger friends on it.

The panasonics have all failed to make it out the other side of the house to where the base was, and in the middle of the house lead to both sides having a failure in coverage.

At our old house, my office in the garage was 60m across the backyard, we had 3panasonics in the house including the base and one in my garage, only occasionally did I get the odd bit of breakup, not enough to convince me to spend the time to get a line to the garage.
