Hey there, I was so tempted to purchase an iPad because I love reading, but recently, I have changed my mind to get myself an ebook reader and buy an iPhone instead.

I had phones in the past, but the screens were too small to read..

So I don't need anything else, I just need a portable tablet-like ebook reader that would read epub, pdf, txt, etc and let me read where ever I go!

All the stuff looks like they are over $100 at least.. I don't need 4gb, I don't need music, I don't need internet...

Any help..? :(

You want a real eBook reader? Amazon Kindle (http://gkz1.co/KindleNZ our aff link). Or Kobo, or Sony. These are actual e-ink books and it's a completely different experience when reading.

Quality screens of a useful size cost money, you won't find much
The Kobo is probably one of the better bets, still a fair chunk of change though.

Edit: Wow, given the USD, that Kindle is a much better bet. I'm rather tempted.

There is a "refurbished" Pandigital Novel 6-inch Touchscreen ePaper eBook Reader today at firstin for $100.

I know some here don't like firstin but I have purchased a few products and have no complaints - yet.

DSE list a $159 job - search for "ebook".

Remember, you can buy those cheap Chinese knock offs, but like those cheap Android tablets, don't complain later when you find out they don't do much more than reading text files and pdf files...

Get a cheap Android tablet from DealExtreme then, as linked above.

Don't complain if they stop working soon after arriving ;)

Kindle, without a doubt. Bought one for my wife who is an avid reader and she wouldnt go back. There are the odd book that you cant have on kindle but that is getting less and less. I used it a few times and as of last week got myself one. With the strong NZ $ it was a bargin. Download is a bresze, One bonus was all the books that my wife bought (via amazon) were available on my kindle no extra charge. That and there are some really good buys, an example is I paid $1.99 for the complete works of Jules Verne.

Get your iphone then, install goodreader application, use the text reflow option which lets you choose font size, removes all the crappy publisher formatting so you can make the most of your little screen and enjoy.  Nothing like being able to read using the nightmode, without a light!

No need for a dedicated ebook!

Fork over the ~$200 for a kindle3. You won't regret it. You WILL regret buying a crappy cheap "tablet ereader" from china. It'll be LCD, have like 2 hour battery life, the screen/touch will suck, it'll be heavy and it'll be slow.

Get a kindle and you'll get a really nice eink screen, a month of battery life (Reading every day), it's light and you can email txt/pdfs/etc to it. (Even over wifi, you don't need the 3G version here in NZ)

Sounds similar to what I do with my Ipod Touch.  I get a couple of solid days reading out of it If that's all I use it for as long as the brightness isn't too high.  I've used an earlier generation kindle, eink is very good I'll give it that, but I can do more with the touch and I actually am quite fond of the goodreader application I only transfer over wifi at home. So I'm sure the iphone would be a similar experience battery drain might be a bit higher since other services will be running.

I agree stay away from cheap touchpad's and similar devices like cheap mp3 players are just not worth touching.

a tips on reading book on iPhone or iPod touch or another LCD tablet

Most of the book app show the book as white background and text in black as default.
It is better for your eyes and battery life if you change the display to black background and white text.

The last time I ordered from their it took about 3 months for the goods to arrive and there was no tracking. In the meantime I got paypal to reverse the charge, as they have a 1 month limit for making claims. Deal Extreme didn't chase up on the product but it was only a few dollars. So I probably would be wary of purchasing from them again due to the time delay, but the products are average/ok for the price.
