Own an iPod Nano 1st generation device? These went on sale late 2005 through 2006. Apple are WARNING that YOU SHOULD STOP USING IT due to a "very rare" battery overheating problem. What is impressive is that Apple is giving free replacement of the affected models, as verified by the serial number. This applies globally.

It's on the back of a successful lawsuit, to pre-empt furthers.

This applies to me.

I got one of the one gig wonders for a birthday present in 2006. The thing has given faithful service ever since. I still use it at the gym or if I go for a run.

The site is very straightforward and Apple says a box is on the way for me to send my current iPod back with.

There is nothing to say what it will be replaced with as I doubt the still have the ability to make 1GB nanos but it am interested to see.

Update: From an article on Stuff they are replacing these with First Gen iPods, oh well. Kind of strange that they have five year old stock still kicking around.

They will probably be refurbs. It is probably easier to replace with the old model, as otherwise people may have attachments that won't work with the new ones, so they don't want to also have to replace those. Also the new one may no have as many features as the old one.

Mine's still working too. It has sentimental value as I bought it in an enormous Virgin Megastore in Texas. They'd just been released and I was lucky to get it. A skyscraper nearby had a ginormous banner of a Nano.

The Virgin Megastore is long gone. The small display-case that landed in the middle of the store was the beginning of what killed the entire chain.

Let's just hope that one of the old Nanos doesn't burst into flame while it is being transported. Maybe the packaging will include a fire-proof bag? :-)
