Hi. First post. I'm just discovering all about the world of ereaders and I'm leaning towards a Sony PRS-T1, primarily because of it's ability to access Library ebooks.

I have a friend who's going to the Staes for a few weeks and they can get one there for me (US99).

Question (dumb probably)-will the Wi Fi work ok here in NZ????

Forgive me for asking, but why not a Kindle? They're pretty much the best device out there for reading.

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

My understanding was that the Kindle couldn't access Library ebooks which is where I would like to use it primarily.

Just be aware that Kindle WILL be able to ready Library books. Has already been released in the states we are just waiting for it to be deployed world wide. Unfortunately there has been no indication of when just that it will happen.

Isn't it some sort of jack-up where Amazon will supply a kindle format copy if the library has an epub available through Overdrive?

The process for borrowing a public library or school eBook for Kindle is similar as for other devices. Most eBooks already in the library's catalog supplied by OverDrive are compatible with Kindle, so users simply browse or search for "Kindle Book," check out a title with a valid library card, and then click "Get for Kindle." Access to the Kindle Book will occur at Amazon's website after signing in and selecting delivery to the user's Kindle device or any of the free Kindle reading apps.

That statement would only be true if the Kindle was compatible with ePub.

The eBooks are only compatible if a Kindle format copy is available. That depends on the Publisher having an arrangement with Amazon.

From Wellington library
"At present, the Amazon Kindle is not compatible with the eBooks we offer through Wellington City Libraries. The Kindle eReader is able to be used by libraries providing eBooks in the United States and we hope this service will be introduced to New Zealand in due course. Watch here for developments."

That whole statement was from a US perspective and was answering your question regarding the process of getting library books on kindle not the availability. I had already stated that it was not available outside of the states yet.

You can also root the T1 and get yourself a full Android interface, nice if you like to tweak the device to your liking (which I do).

Obtain root access - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooting_(Android_OS)

It basically means I have full control over the device, I can install whatever I want on it - for example I use a custom home screen and FBReader as the reading app, and I'm currently playing around with Dropbox integration for wireless syncing of books with Calibre.

Regardless of what the Kindle enthusiasts tell you it is not comparable to say Kobo or Sony.
You cannot read epub books on a Kindle. Some people have been suggested otherwise because they think they can fiddle with book using Calibre. Unless you want to spend a lot of time converting books from Epub to a format suitable with Kindle then I would not suggest a Kindle. If all you want is to read books available from Amazon and nothing in epub format then by all means use a Kindle otherwise I would leave Kindle alone.
Stick with a generic reader than can cope with just about any format.
Also after trying a Kindle you will quickly find that is very cheaply made. It just feels cheap when you handle it.
My recommend would be the two above either Kobo or Sony touch readers, they are well made and work well.
