Can't be right....

Give your battery a couple of full cycles before you pass judgement. I was very concerned my iPad wouldn't last me more than 5-6 hours when I first got it, the first run out of the box barely lasted 4 hours despite saying it was 100% when I started. Now it's had a couple cycles it's lasting a couple of days on standby (8am-10pm) with a good 2-3 hours use a day.

Doesn't really say much, couple of paragraphs before going off on a tangent about the iPhone in general. Nice filler, nice reporting. Typical Stuff dross really.

We don't know all the details but this makes perfect sense though.

Apple wouldn't want all of the bad press they were associated with when the iphone originally launched in NZ and it was one of the most expensive places in the world to purchase.

VF being VF they were obviously in a monopoly position (stock on hand) and were willing to abuse that.

I don't know who makes these type of decisions at VF but seriously, have they not learned their lesson after the last time?

The other side of this could be that Apple are providing the iphone to VF at a price which means VF have extremely low margins which is why they kicked up a stink and wanted to put their own price on it.

If VF over the ditch though can offer a free iphone 4 if you sign up for 24 months and pay $69AUS why can't VF here??? Cost over here would be a further $519.

Sometimes the VF policies seem so short sighted to me, granted I don't have all the details but look at the debacle that has resulted.

How can it be good for VF or their staff to have people purchasing on contracts and then canning them the next day. Surely they would be losing money when the staff time, credit check fee's etc are all taken into account.

If only they offered similar value to what VF AUS are offering they wouldn't have had the launch day programs, their customers would be much happier and they would retain a far higher percentage of their customers in the long term.

If anything, Vodafone's actions made customers loathe the Vodafone brand even more.

Seems their marketing team needs to go back to Marketing 101.

I agree with the rest of your thread but these price comparisons are a little off by my way of thinking. Looking at population sizes alone you have less people in total in NZ than what's just in the Sydney Metropolitan area. It's purely a numbers game, plus alot of very healthy competition. We're getting the competition in NZ finally but we'll never match the market size.

RealExor: I then phoned pretty much every store in Auckland (except Manukau because I don't want to be beaten up for my iPhone or have my car stolen) and all were allocated or out of stock.

Well you'd best stay away from central Auckland too then. I was mugged for my iPhone last week in Myers Park. ANd it weren't even one of those flash NEW ones.

It's the 'Premuim product' line that was sold in NZ (and no where else in the world) that's largely killed it here.

But I guess the majority of NZer's that don't look at what's happening around the world that let them get away with it.

Shame really, if they'd taken a more agressive stance and really tried to get more smart phones out there to more people they'd have more services to sell, could cut the prices and start dealing in volume

I've been a Vodafone supporter for what feels like decades since BellSouth was here.

That being said, with regards to true competition in NZ: Lets see Apple give Telecom the iPhone, and then you'll see what happens.

For many years Vodafone has traded on coolness and a great network. But friends, the XT network that Telecom has now, is just hands down superior.

Customers now expect (And should get) great service from their supplier and a great product experience to go along with it. Both of which Vodafone isn't supplying any longer at a decent standard.

As I said, give Telecom the iPhone 4 and see what happens. I believe on a same model basis, they would migrate in droves.

I think you are correct that the XT network in general terms and data usability/speed is better than VF (after issues were corrected).

However I don't think there is enough difference in the plans for customers to switch.

I also don't see Telecom offering decent subsidies on phones either so I can't see why that would be any different with the iphone.

To be honest I think both TC & VF have gotten a little too comfortable over the past 10 years or so, hopefully 2degrees can roll out their own network nationwide or another player will come onto the market to shake things up a little.

I find it odd how Voda NZ tried to intervene with a company that has market cap bigger than MSFT - they would only be making themselves a powerful enemy. Interesting to see what happens at the next launch.

Yeah - but you have to queue for the sausages - bread is extra, and you have to sign up to receive 2 sausages per month for 24 months.... or give the first sausage back.
