Yeah - but you have to queue for the sausages - bread is extra, and you have to sign up to receive 2 sausages per month for 24 months.... or give the first sausage back.

...And if you want more than 2 sausages a month it's gonna cost you - cos there's no add-in for sausauge on that plans.

khull: I find it odd how Voda NZ tried to intervene with a company that has market cap bigger than MSFT - they would only be making themselves a powerful enemy. Interesting to see what happens at the next launch.

I find it odd that you would expect a company to sell something to customers at a loss.

IF that is what Apple had been trying to do (I'm not even speculating here, just pointing out that this COULD have been a potential scenario), then how could you blame Vodafone???

What's odd is it all came to a head on the last night before the launch. We know of at least a handful of VF stores that had the stock on the thursday night so pricing was definitely the holdup. Either way, the customers suffered with no communication coming from either party.

The other interesting thing is that the iPhone prices dropped by $50 per plan about an hour after they finally appeared on the VFNZ site. Was it planned that we'd see that change? Was VF cutting us that deal or was that the imposed arrangement to get the launch going?

I wondered if that was a mistake.

The plans we ended up with had the SAME level of subsidy as the iPhone 3G and 3GS (they were the same right?).

However what ORIGINALLY released gave users a lower subsidy than previously. This was then changed to be the same subsidy as for the 3GS.

Pretty common phenomenon in the commercial world.

This product is called a "loss leader".

The thought around this is that the people through the door will likely purchase other items at a big profit leading to decent profit overall for the company.

So i guess VFNZ could happily sell the iPhone as a loss leader in circumstances that their plans were hugely profitable( !!! ), or that they could sell more data to overcome this loss incurred on the iPhone product.

This is just purely from a commercial perspective, and in no way am I pointing the finger or apportioning blame.

Familiar with loss leader thanks.

That's not a valid reason to blame Vodafone NZ IF they were asked to sell the phone at a cost that didn't make financial sense to them.

ahmad - I will leave the topic there before we start trolling because I made no mention about who is to blame, and I am stating what has actually happened. Speculating on whether VF is trying to sell for cheaper/more expensive (implied by you) is just that and will remain so.

Also, I have no issues about the iPhone pricing - I would pay for it at whatever the price was decided (whether set by AAPL or VF) on that day.
