Thanks for the heads up. Saves me a wasted trip this weekend.

Thanks for the links, I too now have 9 repairs logged and I still have to fire up some old iPods and the 1st gen iPad bought from stores, which don't show on my support profile, and find out the serial of the 2009 iMac I lent to my parents. But so far the only devices unaffected are my new AppleTV and my 2008 Mac Pro. All the mobile ones are.

I presume the ATV3s I have will be fine, since they have normal plugs on them, no adapter.

So you have to pull the adapter apart to replace the prong part? I don't want to try on an existing one in case I break it - they came assembled so I'm not sure if they are separable or not. My iPhone 6S adapter is all one unit - it's different from all the others. So I guess with that one they have to replace the whole thing. I hope they send me the correct bit.

Oops, accidentally submitted one serial number twice. Surprised the site let me do it. I assume they'll cancel the duplicate in processing?

I have called apple, and they suggested going into their Wellington reseller and getting it swapped. But obviously they aren't ready yet for the deluge of people. IF it is just the snap on plug part, then it is a 10cent part, but it is going to cost them a lot in staff time and getting them out. I have been on the phone for 30 minutes and counting getting one of mine replaced that I purchased separately, so not a cheap exercise in time. Interesting that "Apple advised customers to stop using affected plug adapters and it would provide a redesigned adapter to all affected customers." So basically people shouldn't use these until they have had the part replaced. There are going to be a lot of flat devices for a while, unless people charge via third party chargers.

As there are two variations of this adapter, a 1 amp, and 2.1 amp version, they must only be replacing the prong part, otherwise they wouldn't know the version people need to replace it with.

That is interesting because it sounds like they are going to then send me the wrong one. I initally purhcased a standalone 2.1 A (10Watt) one, but they wanted any serial number of a device. As I had already entered in the serial of my ipad for another adapter, I gave them my ipod serial, which will take a 5W one. They didn't say which one they would send me, so I suspect it will be a 5W one instead of a 10W one

My last couple of iPads got 12W adapters shipped with them. Would be sad to get downgraded to 10W, although I guess it's not much of a difference.

I'm guessing you would get what it was originally shipped with. 10w in my case.

We only found out about this recall after it appeared on Stuff!

We did however receive a tray of duck heads (plug parts of the power adapters) the other day and wondered what they were for.

It is only the removable part, with the power pins in it, that they are replacing, not the whole power adapter.

This recall doesn't affect devices that have a normal power cord such as the iMacs or Mac Pros.

Put in 4 repair orders for various plugs and devices we have round here. Yeah definitely reckon it's just the prong bit that is being replaced. The article on macrumors has a picture of how it breaks.

Its just the "duck head" plug that gets replaced, not the power supply its self

WTF ?

Why on earth do you think you should be entitled to the whole power supply ?

They are replacing the duck head plug, the ONLY faulty part, nothing more is required.

That's interesting, as Apple have placed a $35 hold on my credit card for every one they are sending me, and $35 is the cost of the whole adapter.

My ipad air 2 purhcased just a few months ago came with a 10W one, and it is the same specs with 2.1A output as my older ipad 2 charger. So wonder which models they provided 12W ones one?

I guess it is possible that doing it direct with Apple that they are replacing the whole power adapter, but certainly not the case for AASPs.

Wait and see what you receive from them. :)
