codyc1515: I think its only fair that you repay the amount that you haven't already paid, say you are on a 24 month contract and you have been in the contract for 12 months you should only have to pay back half of the subsidy.

I agree, I anyone should think that is fair too. A subsidy on a contract is basically just the same as getting easy payment terms on the handset. If you terminate early you pay back what's left.

It’s just repaying the money that you were given in exchange for committing to a length of time contract.  If you want to get out of the contract before that time is up then it seems fair that you pay back the money.

True, except:

a) On most plans the penalty decreases the further you get through the plan; and
b) The monthly price for services (here $80) is usually artificially inflated so that the carrier earns back the subsidy over time.

So, repaying the full subsidy after more than half the term doesn't seem right.

As I said, a cancellation fee is fair in principle, but it'd be good to have full information before signing a two year agreement.

Im sure it is this http://www.telecom.co.nz/binarys/schedule_of_disconnection_fees_1_feb_2011_updated.pdf

I also went into Telecom store today and asked about it, they showed me this A4 double page terms and condition sheet. On the right hand corner it shows this same table which is what he said thats how much you need to pay.

Here's why I think that must be wrong.

First: there's no mention of iPhone plans on that sheet (obviously, because it's from Feb 2011).

Second, if the Iphone plan (for $80) came under the "Tier 3: Smartphone $80plan, then the cost of cancelling after x1 month is a penalty fee of $700.  Consider that the iPhone 32gb (usually $1200) is subsidized by $900 (down to $299).  If the sheet you linked is correct, you could sign up today, cancel in one month and profit by $200.  On that basis, I think that sheet must be wrong.

What am I missing?

Just make sure that you read the contract first (as you always should!) and if its in there then you will see it and if its not then you don't have to pay a fee.

I take back my earlier comments then: definitely getting one.

Will be glad to be rid of Vodafone too.

What is the disconnection fee for being within the first year of the $120/mth IPhone plan? The closet plan is the $140 plan in that file.

So, I just want to chuck this here - is this correct for a 16GB iPhone 4S:

Telecom prepaid (i.e. outright) = $1029
TOTAL = $1029

Going on 24 month contract and cancelling after 1 month...

Telecom Smartphone 60 = tier 2 (23 months of contract left) = $500 fee
One month account fee = $60
Phone cost = $549
TOTAL = $1109

Telecom Smartphone 80 = tier 3 (23 months of contract left) = $700 fee
One month account fee = $80
Phone cost = $149
TOTAL = $929

Telecom Smartphone 100 = tier 4 (23 months of contract left) = $900 fee
One month account fee = $100
Phone cost = $49
TOTAL = $1049

Is this right?

Loismustdye: I've gotta use my prepay credit unfortunately before I can go in to my local XT and get the 64 Gb version.
Im guessing they will be hardest to get at first, but I'm still trying to chew through my leftover credit as quick as possible lol.

Your prepaid balance can definitely transferred to your postpaid account, it would appear as a credit on your frist bill.

Are you able to say if stores have any/many 64Gb models from tonight?  I see there's a delay online.

Think I will head along at 6pm: the release suggested they would be taking "registrations" from then, so hopefully at that point I'll be able to find out if there's enough stock for me!  If so, I'll stay; if not, I can sleep.

Woop! etc.

I would be happy with just a 16 gig, i can't see how you would use 64 gig on a phone.
