sbiddle: Out of interest why do people still use screen protectors with gorilla glass? I've yet to see a single screen protector that doesn't affect the optical quality of a screen and/or the usability in bright conditions, and all of them increase the friction meaking it harder to quickly move your fingers, and also attract grease.

I'm by no means careful with my phone, and used to find plastic screens such as those on former Nokia's would be completely scratched within ~3 months without the use of a screen protector. With my last 2 gorilla glass phones the exact same use has resulted in no noticeable marks on the screens.

I'd personally never bother with a screen protector on a gorilla glass phone, and I'd also never buy another phone that didn't have gorilla glass. The only caveat of it is that impact damage will completely trash a gorilla glass screen.

I agree, or to be truthful I want to agree! My 4S is naked now due to hassles getting the protector on, but it is much nicer to use as you said. I also felt my 4 which had a really good protector seemed to get more smudgy nowadays. Given that I have the phone in a case that is a bumper type with a back, so the edges of the case are raised over the screen, and I transport it in a passport zipup I will stay with no protector.

So I've been happily playing with my new phone yesterday, downloading a couple of apps and setting up all my phone contacts :) Unfortunately last night I ran into some problems.

Went to go connect the phone to iTunes and previously where it usually popped up the phone and did various syncing, this time nothing. Just as if I had never connected the phone at all. On the phone itself however, it starts charging (makes a noise and shows a thunderbolt in the middle of the battery indicator), which is strange.

I tried restarting the computer multiple times, including a cold restart, restarting the phone multiple times, checking the system details on my mac - It doesn't pick up the phone at all under "USB" (devices). Even reset the settings for the phone (that was rather painful after spending the whole day customizing it) and that didn't work.

Finally this morning I decided to try give Apple customer support a call. Rang the number and their call centre was closed. Undeterred, I hopped onto Skype and called the Apple Support Centre in the US. The lady who answered the phone was quite helpful, tried getting me to connect the phone in various ways and made sure I was up to date with the latest versions, etc - Unfortunately none of this worked.
She then said she would send me instructions to try and reinstall iTunes and see if that worked. Fortunately, I had tried installing iTunes to another computer (PC) last night and it still had the same problem, phone was not recognized when plugged into the computer - But on the phone it charged.
When I explained this to her, she recognized that I had then effectively ruled out the computer being the problem by trying another one, and so she asked me to try a diagnostic mode to access the phone (she explained it uses a different driver to connect to iTunes). Tried this, didn't work either.

Finally she explained my 2 options - Go back to Telecom to try another cable and see if that works (see if the USB cable was at fault), and failing this, she said that they would replace the phone.

Unfortunately for me, I'm up in Palmy for the weekend and won't be back in Wellington until tomorrow. Went to the Palmy Telecom Store and they gave me a replacement cable to try, but that didn't work either. So seems like it's a problem with the phone. Tried talking to the Telecom staff and they're saying that the phone is going to have to be sent off to be 'assessed' even though it's not even 2 days old. It will then take 5 working days to be looked at before a replacement can be sent which I'm not particularly happy about, considering how much I've spent on the thing.

So Apple are saying that it can be just replaced following all the steps I've taken to try and fix the problem, and the cable has also been ruled out as not being faulty. Telecom on the other hand, are insisting that the phone needs to be sent off to the service center to be looked at before replacement, so I'll be looking at the end of next week (best case scenario) for the phone to be replaced. Really hope there is something better that Telecom can do, it just seems like after everything this is just a bit of a sticking point to a happy ending..

When I ordered my iPhone online from Telecom they sent me an email which had the following in it: "If for some reason you are not completely satisfied with your purchase please contact us within 7 days of receiving your new phone.". I take this as meaning that you can return the phone anytime within the 7 day period. If thats the case then return it and don't tell them about the issues. Then go to another store and buy another one. I'm also quite the sure the Consumer Guarantees Act protects you here, look it up.

This happens with my 3GS from time to time where it charges off the PC but iTunes refuses to acknowledge it (I hate iTunes, fyi...).

Usually it's fixed by simply restarting the PC or finding the individual iTunes services running and manually force them to restart. When you connected it to a PC rather than a Mac did that PC have the latest version of iTunes installed? Did the iPhone show in Windows Explorer as an external drive which you could browse your photos from?

I am using an SGP ultra crystal screen protector. Got it on trade me and it is superb. Easy a pie to put on and I can not even tell it is there. Nice and slippy. No matte finish which is cool. I have tried all the top brands over the years and have to say this is the best so far. The case.....Moshi iglaze XT. Super thin so might even be dockable. Transparent so the phone still looks like an iphone. Won't do too much if I drop it but saving it from being scratched. Great combo if you ask me.

I'm not sure if this is Telecom's standard policy with phones or if it's something that they've just adopted for the iPhone, but they do need to revise it if so. I know they need to be certain no damage has been caused to the iPhone before just handing them out but unless they do a full check with the customer before they leave the store (and I mean a full check) they have to accept returns within what is a very short period. I think within 24-48 hours of purchase this should be fair. Yes, they should check the external water sensors and for any visible damage, but beyond that a replacement in a short timeframe should be accepted.

I had a similar problem on Friday. I got my iPhone at the launch after midnight but when I got home found the microphone didn't work, the guys in store confirmed this but I was told the same as you that it would have to be sent away to be checked. Thankfully they understood my position and agreed to replace the iPhone, hopefully they will for you as well but as the official policy is to send them off to be checked you maybe out of luck. Hopefully they will realise they have to change this policy as not many people would accept spending that kind of money and then being told they'd have to wait.

All I can say is I have had nothing but a positive experience from the guys in the Wellington store and the guys who work for Telecom on here. They are all very friendly and have common sense so am certain you will find them very helpful. Always remember though these guys have a job to do and their hands can be tied so may not be able to bend the rules and we have to respect that.

Had a look at JB Albany today, they had a case I am keen on for the itouch which in essence looked identical to the $14.95 screenhug jobbie but for $27.95 so will give them a go

I emailed them at the beginning of the month asking them about a case for a iPhone 4S (after the iPhone 4S was released) and they said all their iPhone 4 cases would fit as they where exactly the same size. I replied back saying they where wrong (they didn't know) and still have their website showing they all work with the iPhone 4/iPhone 4S.

And yea.. coming soon. iPhone 5 cases ..hahhaha

Sales rep at the Telecom store said the same thing about the 4/4s cases when my wife bought her 4s on Friday. I said that the buttons were slightly different, and he countered with an email he got from head office saying that iPhone 4 cases would fit. So I pulled out my iPhone 4 and compared it with the 4s, and showed the difference. The difference is noticeable, but having said that, many cases would just about fit, and would work in a pinch.

In the end, we went up to JB Hifi and found an iPhone 4 case that had a long gap for the silence and volume buttons, rather than separate gaps, and that did the trick nicely. Phone even docks when in the case.

iPhone 4 cases will fit if they're made for the CDMA iPhone 4 (Verizon) as it has the same button layout as the 4S, so I guess they're kind of correct. They're also wrong since the only version of the iPhone 4 that NZ knows about is the GSM version with its different layout

The Griffin and Agent 18 Cases from ubertec fit fine on the iPhone 4S (I have a Griffin Black from them on my phone at the moment).
