ChrnoXIII: i think at the end of the day we can all bitch about iphone + vodafone in nz and how ripoff they are compared to the rest of the world but we still have to deal with it :( its amazing what monopoly does ae....

iphone 40 fits me fine at the moment in my life and for that i am content haha...

Sorry to break up the pity party, but what monopoly? There are multiple cellular providers, and multiple ways of obtaining an iPhone. Infact the manufacturer sells them direct in NZ.

what i meant to say was that because vodafone are the official carrier on the iphone it lets them set outrageous prices on their plans. one example is that if you think back a few years ago, you will remember that the nz iphone plans were the most said to the most expensive in the world. even today. nothign has changed much and vodafone plans nz's plans are still not at all competitive. Compared to australia where they have multiple carriers for the iphone, the value for your money is certainly less than over here. want unlimited data on your iphone in nz? not even $250 can do that for you -_-

yes it is true you can obtain an iphone elsewhere but no other carrier can offer the subsidies and plans that vodafone can offer simply because they are not the official carrier - hence monopoly (i may have used the term loosely but the idea is still there) and notice that in my post, i was talking about and replying to discussions regarding plans... not the price of the iphone itself.

But they are the same price for all their smart phones aren't they and are not to dis-similar to Telecoms prices.

Therefore the issue is not a monopoly situation in NZ, but the duopoly/oligopoly in NZ. I understand they argue that because of our (low) population density, our costs are higher than overseas.

If the price of the iPhone itself is out of your loose monopolistic term, then its just plans?

There is VFNZ, XT, 2D, TelstraClear, B&W to name a few cellular providers. Hardly a monopoly or anything else to it. You are free to buy it from at least 3 sources, and run it on any network you like.

yes, but you have to take into account the subsidies vodafone offers? and i am thinking i would be right in saying that a majority of normal consumers with an iphone are on plan with vodafone. why? to take advantage of the subsidies that vodafone offers. for some people money does make a difference and whether there is a subsidy or not changes alot.
sure you can go along and use a different carrier but you end up having to pay the extra $480 that vodafone subsidies + a little more compared to if you were on a 2 year contract.

can you let it go? great, you got me... my english is not amazing, i may have misused the word monopoly, but you would be lying if you said you did not see the point i am trying to make...

Problem is that subsidy VF offers is kinda worth diddly squat over the term of the contract. The iphone planes aren't exactly awesome, its more so to get you an iphone for initially less and more than make that back over the next 24mths.

Have a look at your usage and compare it to 2D and Tc plans and see how much you'd be paying per month for each, multiply it by 24 and add the cost of the phone to all 3 numbers and you might be suprised what the total cost of ownership is.

I also loathe the minimum 12mth buy-in with VF (24mths for iphone plans) at the end of the day $60 with TC goes further than $60 with VF.

Does anyone know if you can add more texts to the VF iphone plans? or do you just have to buy a bigger plan?

well for me, i only call occasionally, and text more. each month i would only use $12 for XT's non-stop text and call only when i need to - i am on a wifi campus so internet is not a problem since im usually at university all day anyway. if you look at it that way, the iphone 40 plan fits me alright, i only pay about 150-200nzd more on a plan than if i bought the iphone outright. the included minutes and data are bonus for me

having said that, i can definitely see how it might be better for people who actually use their phone to go with XT or 2D.

and to answer your question, no you cant add more texts. you can only add-on bestmates or vodafone family. if you want more texts you have to go up the next plan.

well at $12/mth for texting and $1300 outright purchase your total cost of ownership is $1588 over 2 yrs vs $1859 on the iphone 40. If you're not using the minutes, don't pay for them.

(also you'd be like the guy in the next room to me in the national park backpackers right now - stuck on dial up speeds)

yea true. but there are some other reasons for me going back onto vodafone. alot of my friends who are on vodafone dont like texing telecom numbers because they have the txt2k addon - costs them money. there are times where sometimes i need to call but dont to "save some credit" - now i can do whatever i like. the mobile data can be useful when im not at uni - out with friends, or over the holidays when im not in campus etc

also if i bought the phone outright and tried to get an equivalent plan on TC - annoy friends, cost more for the total cost of iphone + TC plan since there is no subsidy.

dialup speeds? is vodafone 3G data that bad? lol...

I do see you point, but that doesn't make it valid.
So is not the device, not the plans but the subsidy that VFNZ offers? So VFNZ are abusing commercial position by offering subsidies that no one else offers? So instead of thanking them for allowing you to obtain the device cheaper than even the manufacturer offers, you blast them for somehow restricting you?

Bit by bit, post by post, you are dismantling you own argument.....

Jeez, I'm in the USA now. Just popped into an apple store, the place was buzzing.

Wanna get an iphone 4.0 but waiting until just before i come home in a couple of weeks.

The phone itself looks nice.

wanted to see nz pricing first if possible.

$1200 on a plan? Not a chance. The 3G was only $600 on a $60 plan, so I can't see the iPhone 4 being literally twice the price.

For those who are upgrading on a VF plan, when upgrading do you pay the device + plan price or the device only price?
