I'm in the market for an iPhone 5 in New Zealand, and I am a Vodafone customer, and I don't want to change due to rubbish telecom reception where I live. However, a 16gb iPhone 5 is the normal $1049 on Vodafone and $1029 on telecom… why is this? Can I buy the phone from telecom and put a Vodafone sim in? If I change the carrier on the phone I shouldn't have any problems, right?

I just want to make sure there isn't a particular reason for a $40 price difference other than plain old price competition

Thanks, maths is not my thing. All I want to know is if I can buy the telecom phone and put a Vodafone sim in it.

I think the best deal on an iphone 5 is the Telecom deal they running at the moment.

$89 per month. $180 for the phone, 24 month contract with plenty of data/texts and voice calls.

But yea - Its a contract, but worth considering if you use your phone a lot.

Just to make it clear: a term contract means you get the phone cheaper but you must stay with the operator until the end. If you want to cancel it then you will pay an early termination fee (ETF) that may as well bring the phone to full price.

If you are not buying a phone outright think before you sign the papers.

Exactly, not changing to telecom, I get enough data for what I need with vodafones prepaid "plans" so I'm only interested in the handset

I'd just spend the XTRA :) $20 and get the phone and sim from Vodafone. So much less hassle.

What is your time worth? How much extra time will it take to get the phone from telecom & sim from Vodafone plus asking people about weather it would work or not?

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Also if you get from Vodafone you can go back to them when anything goes wrong. Get the phone from Telecom and then if you ever need help/warranty you will have to convince the store it's not the Vodafone SIM causing it.

Seriously, avoid future problems. $20 is not a big deal if you are buying a $1000 phone.

Oh yes, I didn't think about the warranty, etc. thanks for that. To be honest my iPhone 4 is rapidly deteriorating; I was going to upgrade once the latest iPhone had came out because the iPhone 5 would drop to $900. My phone isn't going to last that long though :(

I got an iPhone 5 on Telecom with a month open term contract and cancelled the following month. All I wanted was the phone (because Vodafone couldn't sell any back when it was contract only) so I put my Vodafone sim in it, in short yes you could do it that way.

Voda will also give you a tradein price on your Iphone 4. Maybe not as much as you can get on TradeMe, but a lot less hassel.
