My wife updated her iPad 4 to iOS 8 today, and now when she pushes the sleep button to switch the screen off, it makes a harsh, almost mechanical sound, kind of like a band-saw.  It does this even when the sound is muted.  Obviously it didn't do this before iOS8.  With no moving parts, it's clearly not mechanical.  Any ideas?  A quick google search hasn't shown anything...

Try toggling Settings > Sounds > Lock Sounds.

Solved it - I channeled my inner "Roy" from the IT Crowd and suggested my wife "turn it off and on again."  It worked!
