Despite being an Apple person, this one is struggling to convince me of it's purpose.

How about y'all?

Nope, I like a watch I don't need to turn on to see the time the battery is still good after 4 years.

Right. Even the Seiko Astron - which can correct itself using the atomic clocks in GPS satellites - can do that anywhere in the world using solar power and an internal storage cell!

Same here. Not a chance I'm paying 600 bucks (minimum) for a watch that can't go a day. Ridiculous.

The 18 hours quoted is from the maker which is usually inflated or absolute best case scenario. So day to day I'd say you'll be lucky to get a half day out of it.

No. If I was getting one, I would want the stainless steel, a larger face, and black, which looks like it will be over $1k.  I think around the $300 mark is more reasonable. These will however be big margin items for apple if they sell. But I suspect they may have to drop their pricing, which they have done in the past when things havn't been popular.
The 1 day battery life though is a dealbreaker for me. As we all know, battery levels decrease, so I suspect after a relatively short time, it will fail to make it through the day. Really they needs to sort out the battery life. It should be solar powered to keep it topped up during the day. My current analogue looking watch is solar powered, and I never need to worry about changing the time on it as it is fully automated.

I think I'll wait and see what the resale value is like. Being that they are probably going to release a new one every year or so with new features, if the resale is crap then you are either locked in or you pay big dollars for any upgrade. At least when I upgrade my iPhone I can sell the old one for a half decent price.

Also at present smart watches in general just don't have a killer app for me - although that hasn't stopped me buying shiny tech in the past :-)

I think it will all depend on screen time i.e. how often do you fire up the screen to look at stuff.

I think I could probably live with a 24-hour battery life... it would just be a matter of routine to put the watch on the charger overnight. But 18 hours is ridiculous... it's not inconceivable to have a long day from say 6am to after midnight.

Equally ridiculous are the prices.... $500+ for the basic model when a Pebble Time is about half that.

Not to mention that the Pebble has a couple of years history and development, whereas the Apple one will be buggy.

And finally (and not least), I don't want a watch which would lock me into the Apple hegemony. It will apparently only talk to iPhone.

Hopefully it will crash like a lead balloon. More likely, the iWatch 2 will already be in development, and will turn out to be a practical proposition. But I wouldn't buy one of those either. I'm more than happy to leave it to the Apple zealots.

One thing Apple does well is launch products mostly free of bugs. Controlling the entire manufacturing, software, hardware process has it's advantages. I am enjoying my LG G Watch R which looks like a watch, is mostly a watch but notifies me of important stuff. Likewise the Pebble is great because it knows what it is and doesn't try to be anything more.

I am sure the Apple Watch will sell in the truckloads.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

One celeb tweated this "We should be thanking Apple for launching the $10,000 "apple watch" as the new gold standard in douchebag detection."

usually at product release a lot of stock is put in apples look and design, comparitive to whats already on the market. and most of the time, apple deliver on that with some beautiful looking products

but this time, i seriously think the android offerings have them beat. the moto 360 and and upcoming huawei watches look waay cooler

I agree, it actually looks more like a womans watch from it's design and shape. You would have thought they may have come out with different case designs, rather than just different sizes.
