Hi, just wondering if anyone can offer an opinion. I'm having a problem with the Apple TV location services.

My router Is set up to use the fixed IP of the AppleTV to route it's traffic through to a UK VPN.

I used to simply have a DNS service (DNS4Me) which worked/works fine until recently. The app I use to access UK TV is called TV player and worked a treat until the decided to update the app. It now checks for location on launch.

If you set the timezone/location on the AppleTV to manual rather than autoselect, the app won't launch as it will only work if timezone/location services are autoselect.

So, I set about using a VPN (ExpressVPN OpenVPN config) so the AppleTV thinks it is somewhere else (UK), but even though the apps work and I can see it's traffic using the VPN, the location services are still autoselecting to NZ.

All other region based devices that don't use location services are working fine, I.e. iplayer etc, but I can't get the AppleTV to draw it's location from anywhere other than NZ.

Any one have any ideas?

Have you tried a DNS geolocation unblocker service to see if that will work?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Hi, yes I have. That was the original approach and that works with most services.

This one app requires validates against the AppleTV location services hence why I teetered a VPN Rio try confuse the location services in getting it's location from the UK based server. The AppleTV still thinks it's in Auckland.

Agree Apple tv is blocking due to location services. Of note, Fire TV works fine with the app and so does my mac plugged into TV.

Just doesn't make sense to me to be honest. The location services is merely grabbing its information based on the responses it gets at the point of access. But VPN should telling it that it is in the UK.

Head hurts.

But how does location services work? On an iPhone or iPad it gets location info from nearby WiFi APs, so the ATV probably does the same.

Oh wait a minute.

Are you saying that it picks up its location from the AP in my house that it is connecting to, as opposed to an external Apple infrastructure that informs it of its location?

***Edit

Scratch that. My AppleTV is connected via Ethernet, not wireless. The only way it can get location is via router traffic, which I know is going through the VPN. Yet whenever I set it to auto detect, it comes back as NZ. Perhaps it something about the way the VPN service is delivered, I may have to check with the VPN service provider.
