Just out of interest.  I know people who go back overseas to see family in China.  Do China iPhones come installed with Google apps or are they replaced by Chinese apps?  When they get back to NZ how do they replace the apps?

Cheers.

Interesting question though, given censorship.

Oh yeah.  Being not an iPhone user, lol.  Caught me off guard.  I guess the question is, with Android google apps etc .. are blocked, they are not installed and replaced by Chinese apps.  With an iPhone sourced in China, can one still install google and Facebook apps when they get overseas or is there something in the phone that prevents this?

Apple is open. (Ok, you all, shut up!)  Its one eco system, so you can install all that you wish from the App Store. BUT, each country has its own app store, so I would assume China's app store is censored. When you get home, I assume (?) you can change the country to NZ on your Apple ID and have access to NZ app store.

Yup, wasn't aware being an Android user.  With a Chinese sourced iPhone, can a person still install google and Facebook apps?  Or is there a restriction on the phone?  If so is there a workaround.

Others may know more, but the iPhone doesnt restrict apps, the App Store can, as thats country dependent, so most likely affected by China censorship. How does Android work there?

Can you access facebook on a PC in China? , Can you access google mapss via a browser

If you can do these behind the firewall, then I guess you will be able to install them on an iphone,

If its not possible to get access to this software on a PC, I'm guessing that even if you had the apps installed, they may not function when you are on a .cn network....

I've never got a chinese simcard but what I read and watched, the apps activity is blocked in China and once you get into Hong Kong you get all the updates.  Not sure if a China bought Android can install google apps or if they need to be rooted and reinstall the software.

Edit.  I have heard that overseas simcard is not blocked.  Also, some hotels that caters to foreigners the hotel Wi-Fi isn't blocked.  I have been told that the big mobile companies sell 2 versions of phones - the local version with the Chinese apps and the overseas version (preloaded with Google and Facebook apps) for visitors but i am unsure if it is pretty much unusable while it's in China.
