I phoned Vodafone today and had them talk me through how to set up my .vodafone.net.nz email address but there is one catch.  Unless you have a data plan with Vodafone then you are unable to access any email through the iphone even if, like me, you are on wifi.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and are there any suggestions?

I think you've been misinfomed a bit there.

I don't have a data plan set up on my iPhone and I have set up 2 gmail accounts and an imap account in the email, all of which work  perfectly via wifi.

They might have the .vodafone.net.nz email locked down so that it can't be accessed except via a data plan however, this I don't know.

Seriously, people should start moving away from using an ISP's e-mail service. Either use a hosted solution or the freebie hosted ones with your own domain. Google and Domains Live both offer this...

Cheers for that.  It is interesting the mis-information that customer service reps put out.

I will set up a gmail and see how I get on.
