At this point I have an iPhone X (64GB) and the US-model GPS-only Apple Watch S4, as well as AirPods, and a MacBook Air (2015).

I'm seriously considering ditching my X and the watch for a fitbit and the OnePlus 6T. The only thing I can think my AW is useful for is the EKG feature, but if I'm dropping Apple, would it be worth keeping the watch even?

It's now at the point where none of my friends use Apple devices anymore, which means no more iMessage. So with that said, What is your opinion of dropping Apple entirely(ish)?

Not at all tempted to go to Windows on the computer, and Linux won't give me the tools I need.

For the phone: Not convinced on Android. I don't want to go back to something I have to fiddle with forever to get sort of how I want it, and the GUI and feeling of the OS just doesn't sit well with me.

I think you will find the watch is basically useless if you move to using an Android phone, and that the Android watches are underpowered compared to the Apple Watch.

But by all means go ahead and switch.

In the mean time I will enjoy logging in to my Apple computers with my watch and having everything sync between devices, including clipboards between my iPhone and my Mac.

I typically use vscode and ruby, so it's not a major thing if I were to switch, I could go to Arch quite easily. I wasn't aware of clipboard sharing, and I have a strange issue with unlocking with the watch which causes the Mac to think it has screen sharing enabled. it gets quite annoying. The sync is quite nice though I must admit, as is AirDrop.

I'm realistically looking at the OP 6T McLaren Edition if for no other reason than it's running Oxygen, so I know I can root it, and it has a ludicrous amount of RAM onboard, and I'm sure I could probably skin it to look like iOS if I absolutely wanted to. That said, the platform lock-in makes it hard to switch, which is why I'm here asking for opinions.

For most users I really don't think it matters anymore. Android and iOs are more or less comparable from my perspective. I went from an iPhone to Android last year. I don't really find either better or worse, just a bit different. I use a OnePlus 6, Ticwatch S, iPad Pro and Windows. To me it really depends on what services you use.

We use cross platform services (Google Photos, WhatsApp, OneDrive etc) so we can choose the best device for us.

If you are dependent on Apple services then YMMV

I just went the the other way around (from Android to iOS).

Had a number of android devices over the last year, the thing that made me move was I was over slow updates and "interesting" bugs. For example I had a oneplus 6t that after opening 4 pictures on twitter would not open another one until i forced close twitter. Another example is a top of a line phone that would kill of background apps while they were in use (i.e. spotify when using it via bluetooth to the car media system). This was after excluding them from battery management etc. Use to have reboot the phone twice a day as ram management was awful on it.

My main issue I had with iOS / iphones before was battery life and slow charging. When moving to iOS i talked to a few friends that had a XR and found out that they were getting 2 days battery so I got one (and can confirm 2 day battery life). Also dual sim was a big thing for me (work number and personal) and was able to get a XR that supports 2 sim cards.

Android is pretty and you can do a lot with them but I am at the stage now where I am over that and just want something that works.

I do use a fitbit with both android and iOS and have been happy with it :)

I personally think that the AW has much better fitness features then a Fitbit, including GPS without needing your phone and the ability to store and play music to bluetooth headphones. I have switched to android in the past and my main issue was lack of updates even on flagship phones. The only consistent phone for updates I owned was a Pixel XL, don't get me started about Samsung!

Yes, it's integration is top notch

Having no one to talk to using iMessage seems a bizarre reason to dump a 2k phone and expensive laptop, more so , buying them for that reason

Don't get me wrong, I'm keeping my Mac, just the phone and watch. I used to switch platforms every year or so and now I don't anymore, so I'm looking forward to that again.

From all the Android phones the OnePlus' are my favourites. I have a 3T and would love a 6T but it still does the trick and I can't fault it for anything so I am still using it. Every other phone I had before Apple and Android made me want to upgrade in <2y.

As for updates they are really on it. Yeah Pixel might be better at that but we're talking days. And I wouldn't buy a Pixel just for that.

if you're going to ditch Apple, you'll be needing to ditch the Apple Watch as well, it doesn't work with anything except an iPhone

if you have an AW with EKG, that means its basically brand new Gen 4 device, seems weird to buy something then ditch it almost immediately

(It's not that it can't be a valid conversation, but it's more the typical standard of debate in such threads, eg this kind of post.)

Not really, those days are well behind us, the feature gap is small. And what he said is correct and probably works both ways

You can install One Drive on just about anything (iOS,Android,windows etc...) these days and sync files across devices.

Plus other cloud storage services are available.

Not an Apple user so I'm not sure if iCloud does anything unique or special that the competition doesn't.
