Looking to buy a iPhone to test out for a few months and settled on the XS Max. However I notice that quite a few state that the front camera is working but Face ID not working. e.g. iPhone XS MAX | Trade Me Marketplace It seems to be a things with Mobile City listings, but not unique to them.

Is this because the screen or something has be replaced by a unauthorised service centre, or are they just covering their butt?

Nokia 6110, 6210, 6234, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Huawei Ideos X5 (Windows Mobile), Samsung Galaxy SIII, LG G4, OnePlus 5, iPhone Xs Max (briefly), S21 Ultra. And I thought I hadn't had many phones - but the first one around 1997.

Sounds like a dodgy repair that used third party parts, which means the parts don't have access to the Secure Enclave that handles Face ID (and Touch ID where applicable).
