So I got the new in ear headphones with mic about four days ago. They come with spare mesh bits for the end and three sizes of ear buds.
I bought them primarily for the pause button and also I need mic input for some apps I have (guitar tuner for one, voip sip for another, I also have the free "I talk" app.)
I had to switch out the medium ear bud size for the small ones.
They work really well, in case anyone is thinking of buying some.
Can't comment on the bass as I don't listen to music but they do everything else as advertised.
The cord is a rubbery type texture. The mic/button is located right at mouth level with the ear buds in.
The pause switch is a God send. No more opening my folder case to start/stop the book I'm listening to.
A test of the "iTalk" app (free) works brilliantly with the mic.

So, I'm happy and can recommend them with the reminder that I'm not a music listener.

I don't suppose you have access to a 1st gen iPhone to test these out on?  Mad keen to get them if they work on it!

No, but if you have a spare one, it would be a great gift to me, Santa. ;)

I've just been messing with Fring and SIP and call quality is really good.
I'm going to go try my guitar tuner app next. :)

which app is that?  I've got GuitarToolkit and can't rate it any higher!  It's AWESOME!  Grab it if you haven't got it and play the guitar.  In-built chord charts with simulated fretboard and strings of 6 and 12 string guitars, or bass, so that you can hear what the cord sounds like by strumming the touchscreen!  metronome, tuner, etc.  An amazingly cool app, my favourite so far!

Guitar toolkit. :)
It is definitely worth the price!

I just got off the iPod (lol) with my sister in Canada. A half hour SIP based phone call for free! Granted, it cuts you off after fifteen minutes so I just "redialled" and talked to her. She was getting echoe on her end, but she gets that even with the regular phone. I still haven't gotten around to trying the built in mic on the earphones with Guitar Toolkit but the recording quality was pretty good for voice and it worked well with the phone call.

I still wish xnet would tell me the voip settings so I could use the pod as an extra home handset.

According to this excellent review, the new in-ear phones DO work with the iPhone, 3G and 1st gen.  The only buttons that don't work are the volume +/- which doesn't matter considering the dedicated buttons on the phone itself.  Might have to get myself some of these going by the review - they sound awesome (no pun intended)!
