I dont see how this will benefit NZ'ers as our dataplans are way over price and no company is offering unlimited data for the iphone.

it's quite simple - i save money by using this to call friends and family overseas from my cellphone over wifi.  this is a way more convenient than having to sit at my computer to do the same thing, or spend tons of money doing the same thing from my landline.  seems like a no brainer to me.

How does my dataplan effect this. The VoIP runs only on Wifi.

When on wifi, can call international at affordable rates.  Can also participate in 3way and 4way phone conferences between distributed team.

Much easier for me to call using skype on iPhone from overseas hotel wifi rather than having to connect my macbookpro and pull out a headset.  Also a little more portable.

*Officially* it's only for Wi-Fi, but if you are jailbroken and you install "Voipover3g" from cydia then you can use it over 3G (though it would churn through any data credit you have). Once you install the app you need to go into “/Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/VoIPover3G.plist” and configure what apps get tricked by adding the app’s bundle identifier to it - Skype's is "com.skype.skype"

But I have had crash issues when in the middle of a call, this happens with or without the Voipover3g. It kills the whole phone and I have to do a hard reset

If they fix the crashing issue then it'll be a great app for use at home (personally I won't use it on 3G as it'll be too price) but this should have been tested more throughly as there are numourus people having the crash issue (see Engadget).

Hi,

Ditto on the crashyness of Skype on my iPhone, plus a friend of mine. Seems to load up & list contacts fine, but when swapping tabs in the app, or initiating a call it's been crashing back to the springboard (not a total phone crash). I would expect an update very soon (I hope).

Cheers,
Mike

i hear that if you're running this on jailbroken phones with Clippy installed - and possibly any other copy/paste manager, you can fix the crashing by disabling them.

someone would probably make a hack to use skype over 3g without jailbreaking.

I don't have Clippy or any other copy/paste app, though probably worth a try for those that do. I would also note though that people that aren't jailbroken (a friend of mine has an iPod Touch that isn't) has also experienced issues.

Hi - there's a pretty damn prompt update to the substrate available via Cydia (for JB devices)- which seems to solve the crashing issue I was having. Initially (after the update) I could text chat fine but it wouldn't place a call (messaging saying I needed wi-fi, altho' I was on wi-fi). I then did the old complete turn off & back on again and Skype is now running very well indeed - calls & text chat. Nice.

Cheers,

Mike

I can confirm the updates have worked. I just had an hour call to the UK on Skype on my iPhone...Woohoo.

I have to say the quality was brilliant. Asking the other person how the quality was and they said it was great, no issues what so ever.

Whilst updating the substrate I also updated 'voipover3g' and can confirm it does work, however there is a drop in quality and it will use a huge amount of Data. I wouldn't recommend using it over 3g unless you really need to.
