Telecom have been "in talks" with Apple and support the right frequencies. Vodafone already have a (fixed term?) contract with them to supply the phones, but they're nigh on useless as phones outside of the CBD as the iPhone doesn't support 900Mhz. Who gets the new one, and what (ridiculous?) prices are they going to be?

Okay, so what i don't get is this. At the keynote it was advertised that the existing 3G iPhone will be reduced to USD$99 as of today. Currently it's advertised as about $1000 on vodafone NZ website. So a phone that will cost a grand total of NZD$160 with the iPhone capabilities will instead be close to $1000 here... and i can't see vodafone reducing their price any time soon.

Oh, and the 3Gs will be USD$299 right, so i'm guessing that the price in NZD will be about $1200 or so right, so pretty much close to three times what it should be.

So, the big question to me (and i'm a very new iPhone researcher) is why we wouldn't just buy one from the states and use it here... Am i being simple?

In the US the iPhone is locked to AT&T's network - won't work outside of that.

All of those US prices you mention, involve some form of long term contract with AT&T, the $1200 NZ Vfone price is a "walk away price"

Let's compare Apples and Apples?

Those U.S. prices include two years contract with AT&T and possibly rebates. The Vodafone price you are quoting is full price with no contracts.

You can get the same iPhone 3G 8GB for as low as NZ$199 if you sign a Vodafone contract.

Ahh, i get it now, a little price discrepancies are fair enough i guess. Is NZ one of the few countries that doesn't sell its iPhones locked to the carrier? Well, currently at least.

I get the impression Telecom and Vodafone might have a bit of a sh!t fight over who gets the phone if supply contracts haven't been signed already. Could this bring the start of carrier locks to NZ do we think?

Unlikely,

Both XT and Vodafone have publically stated recently-ish they are not planning on locking handsets in NZ.

I think NZ, France and Hong Kong are pretty much the only countries selling completely unlocked iPhones. Odds are there are more of them, but they're certainly in the minority. Hence why some people are buying them up off Trademe as true unlocked iPhones sell for good money overseas.

Not quite sure what you're actually wanting.

Vodafone will have the 3G S and will sell it unlocked. You just need to walk into a Vodafone store, buy an iPhone, put in an XT SIM and change the APN settings. You're away laughing with a handset that will work great on the XT network.

I think he wants XT to officially sell it to get a subsidy on the iPhone when signing onto a fixed-term contract.

Hi all

simple question. is it really as simple as described above by sbiddle?
just buy it, insert xt sim and change some settings? any down falls in this?

I have been on telecom for years, moved up the ranks, spend a lotta coin with them, and get great rates.
Dont want to switch, but really want an iPhone for great compatability with all my gear.

Any indication on how long to find out if telecom will do it? (a link to a release site will suffice)
Should i sit around and wait? or go for vodafone sold one and try this conversion.
