Was just having a look at the att website in America. Here is my plan:
Buy an 16GB iPhone 3G s and get it sent to a relative I have in America. Pay the early termination fee of $175 and get out of the contract. Then I own the iPhone without a contract. Get my relative to send it to me here and have it unlocked and jailbroken.

$199(iphone cost) + $175(early termination fee) =$374 USD which is $580 NZD

Will this work??

No, there is no SIM unlock for the iPhone 3G S and it could be months or weeks if ever before it's simple to do.

Follow blog.iphone-dev.org for more info.

I think its a good plan but just wait till the unlock is released. I might do the same thing myself.

I think it works out to be the cost of an iPhone if you buy it outright from vodafone or even more, so probably 1000+ buy would be less depending on how long you have had the plan.

Surely you can wait a month. You might get a slightly cheaper phone from the US but the hassles of having a hacked unlocked phone (if this will even be possible) + no warranty in NZ (iPhone warranties are country specific as I found out the hard way with an Australian officially unlocked iPhone) don't seem worth it.

We are one of the only countries in the world selling fully SIM unlocked iPhones. This is a Very. Good. Thing.

hey, what happens if you 'lose' your phone? - are you still required to pay disconnection fees?

It is tempting, primarily because we don't even have a 'confirmed' release date by any of the carriers here - all we know is july sometime.  If I had a date, and a confirmed pre-order, it'd be a lot easier to dea lwith the wait. . .

Wouldn't work though would it? You have to insert your social security number when purchasing online so they can do a credit check. So unless you have someone over there that is willing to let you use their name, social security number and have clean credit you would be out of luck.

I've got 12months left on my business contract and its 500 bucks to brake it... so I might look at the states option again.

I didn't realise even though I didn't get a free phone when I went on a work plan they still put me on a contract... guttered.
