Is there any way to tell what connection the phone is using for data when both Wifi and 3G are available?

Yes, if it's using 3G it will say 3G up by the carrier logo... Otherwise it will have a Wifi symbol there.

Yup. The little wifi symbol with the sort of wave-band like look wil be there if it's using Wifi.
