I think it's nothing to do with apple. It's foxconn's problem

For the hundreds-of-thousands of workers there the average (per 100,000) is still less than the rate per 100,000 citizens in china....and many other countries for that matter. I think the media just loves to jump on things like this and quote statistics without any perspective.

Granted that with foxconn it's in one facility, but it'd be interesting (if a bit morbid and sad) to know what the rate is for Macdonalds employees vs starbucks in USA etc.

NZ's rate is 13.2 per 100,000
SO if there were 300,000 people (like the population of workers at foxconn) that'd make almost 40?

Still...don't get me wrong for a second, I really do think it's tragic. When someone takes their own life everyone involved in any way is rreparably damaged.

The coffee we enjoy is in some cases harvested by people who are exploited. The eggs you think are Free Range might not quite be as "free range" as you think/hope they are. Your clothes/shoes could be made by 8 year olds.

Shall I even mention the oil that goes in our cars and where it comes from?

I'm not trying to say any of these things should be ignored or glossed over. But if you're going to single out the people that have to make the iPhone, what about all the other people/animals/planets above?

Unless we were to work in that factory, in that culture, and see the whole picture, how can we pass judgement?? I doubt we can really get our heads around the whole picture because without growing up in such an alien environment we can't even pretend we understand the dynamics.

I decided to sync my iPhone with iTunes today and I was thinking many negative thoughts too. There's no tall buildings around here fortunately so no-one was harmed.

Huh? From one of the articles:

Liang's death was the ninth in a spate of similar incidents in which Foxconn employees have fallen to their deaths from buildings. Shenzhen police are treating the cases as suicides.

Nine suicides at Foxconn, obviously pressure from Apple has some part to play in it.

But then again it's Apple, so they do no wrong (unlike Microsoft) Undecided

Statistically that's an erroneous comparison, as it presupposes that Foxconn employees are representative of the entire population, which of course is incorrect.
You would need to see breakdowns of age, sex, beliefs etc, to get a proper comparison.

Also I'm unsure about the surrounding, as the engineer who lost the first iPhone, and was a "suicide", but the facts of the death were very suspect, more in line with coercion than a straight suicide.

TRUE, because that would assume that some foxconn workers were newly-born and some were over 90-years old.
*retracted* (but wouldn't put it past them lol)

From Wikipedia.org...

Among other things, Foxconn produces the Mac mini, the iPod, the iPad, and the iPhone for Apple Inc.; Intel-branded motherboards for Intel Corp.; various orders for American computer manufacturers Dell and Hewlett-Packard; motherboards for UK computer manufacturer Zoostorm; the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 for Sony; the Wii for Nintendo; the Xbox 360 for Microsoft, cell phones for Motorola, the Amazon Kindle, and Cisco equipment.

So you still want to buy a PS3 or Wii or Kindle or Cisco box etc etc etc.

Makes me want to buy 3 iphones! Nah only joking, but like it's been mentioned, they have choice, plus the amount of deaths for 300,000 people isnt all that much.

if you look at the statistics

Basic age of Foxconn workers 16-24, 24-35 group brackets, it still is lower than Chinas rate for those brackets.  Plus they have just been given a 20% payrise.  Of course the pay rise should have come before: Harrassing the staff member over the original iPhone incident, security guards beating others, hiring an exorcist/healer for the place...

Does this mean you won't buy:

Apple, Dell, HP, ECS, Intel motherboards and most other motherboards(a lot of motherboards use foxconn sockets), Playstation 3, Wii, Xbox360, Motorola, Cisco networking gear, Kindle

Ok, apart from motorola, who haven't really produced a good phone since the Razor 5 years ago, would you seriously skip out on all that?

I seriously wouldn't.  It's a total overreaction.  Everyone knows suicide clusters usually follow a suicide, whether it be in NZ or China, it doesn't matter
