Having just purchased an iPad I understand that any apps that I've purchased for my iPhone will run on the iPad in a letterboxes or pixel doubled form unless there is an iPad specific version of the app available.

My question is if there are iPad optimised versions of any of my apps available, will iTunes automatically identify them and load them onto the iPad or is there some sort of manual action required by me?

Although I don't own an iPad, from my iPhone experience of late, it will update for you automatically. Even the apps I am running on my iPhone are telling me there are updates for the sake of the iPad compatibility and other bug fixes. So you should get it.

If an app is universal (works on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) it will have a '+' symbol beside it while browsing the App Store, meaning that it will automatically sync with your iPhone and your iPad unless you tell it not to.

In iTunes, click on 'Apps' on the left pane and it will show you which of your apps are for the iPad only, which are for iPhone/iPod Touch only, and which are the universal ones.

Thanks, guys. I have just noticed that one of my apps (Wunderradio) is working in big screen friendly format on my iPad so it's just a matter of waiting and hoping that the publishers of my other apps will get up to date.
