I have an Iphone 3GS that was on 4.0
Since last week Wifi has stopped working properly.
I can get an ip address from my DHCP server and of 192.168.1.60 fine with all the right gateway and dns settings are ok.
I can ping that ip address ok from my laptop at 6ms with no missed pings.
But when I try and access the internet it just sits there stalling, this is on all apps in including the app store.
If I turn off wifi it gets everything fine through my XT connection.
I just upgraded to 4.01 to see if that would fix it but it is still the same.
I've tried adding the server manually and also using a static IP address but still no go.
I've also just done a restore to original and restored from backup but its still the same..

Any ideas anyone ?

Hi - there are a bunch of postings on Apple's discussion boards about WiFi breaking after the iOS 4 upgrade ( http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1141 ). It sounds like there are 2 separate issues (or maybe more) - some people can't enable WiFi at all & some can't join certain networks. It seems the network joining issue is dependent on the encryption used - WEP or WPA. I'm having (probably a related issue) the problem of not being able to join WiFi hotspots that require a redirection to a login page (eg. CafeNet, Zenbu) since changing to 4.0.
Anyone else able to shed some light....?

Same issue here on both 3G & 3Gs, in fact I now cannot even view any wireless networks at all, it just sits there polling...

I have tried many of the so called fixes out there, but it makes no difference on either phone.

I heard a disturbing rumour that I don’t really see how it could be true (but you never know) that the ios4 update could fry the older phones wifi chips ~ again I’m fairly sceptical of this but still...

Ok, here is what i did to fix it, My wifi is working fine again on 4.1 on a 3Gs.
Apparently 4.0 and 4.1 doesn't do DNS servers properly after a while if you are getting everything via DHCP from your router or use your routers ip as the DNS Server.

What I did was setup a Static IP address and put xtras DNS servers in the DNS -
202.27.158.40
202.27.156.72
and left out my router address 192.168.1.1 of the Dns servers on the Iphone.
My router address was first before then Xtras in the config DHCP did in the DNS servers.

Lets hope it keeps going now but its stable and fast now..
I was considering warranty and a new phone but not now !!

So I had the same problem with wifi. Just up and died all of a sudden for no apparant reason. couldn't see any wireless networks at all, either my home one or public ones. I tried resetting the network settings and restoring the phone with no success and was about to retire the phone.
Last night however, I restored wifi by doing the following:

1. Used Bluetooth to connect to a laptop. A Macbook in this case. Connection went fine with no issues, although I've never experienced any BT issues and the phone has been paired with my car stereo for ages.

2. Used Wififofum to scan for networks. Obviously you'll need to be jailbroken for this. It's worth noting perhaps that Wififofum didn't see any networks before I'd connected to the laptop with BT. Neither did any other 3rd party wifi tool.

3. Wififofum found my home network and successfully joined and used it. However, when looking at the wifi settings through Settings>wifi the home network was listed, but no IP or other info was there.

4. Another reset of the network settings seemed to fix this problem and the phone is now back connecting to wifi with no issues whatsoever.

So in my case this wasn't a hardware problem. Maybe the baseband was corrupted and was fixed somehow by connecting to the laptop. I have no idea how, but hopefully this might help someone else.

My wifi problem since upgrading is that on some free hotspots, I can no longer download anything from the app store or itunes. I am asked to check my date/time settings (which appear to be correct.

Damn it tried this and still have nothing... frigging apple.. This is why im getting a galaxy s ~ give the g/f the iphone.

Did you try setting the connection manually and putting on the ssid in manually instead of trying to scan for it ?

Sure did, i have tried a number of things on my router as well static ip's/ dhcp i/p's, swearing ~ still no go.

and you tried putting in your broadband isp's DNS settings, not using your router IP as the DNS ?

Think so, unless i have my wires crossed ~ in my router i have specified the xtra dns settings ~ reset both the iphone and router.

one thing, in a previous post you said "and left out my router address 192.168.1.1 of the Dns servers on the Iphone."
where is that screen on the iphone ? the only options i get for connecting to wifi network manually is under choose a network - other - and then enter the router name manually, the security type and password, no option to specify the router address or anything...

What have i missed ?

it was when i went through general/network/wifi/other after i put in the wireless ssid and password another screen came up and i was able to put in the static ip address, router address and dns servers.

hmm

I go settings-general-network-wifi then under choose a network select "other" enter ssid and security type and it just pops up cannot connect .. really annoying

and did you do a settings/general/reset/reset network settings then shut down the phone.
pull the sim card out, wait one minute then replace the sim card and restart the phone ?
