Hi guys,

Thought I would start up this thread in readiness for today's official launch of the Apple iPad in New Zealand.  Please share your experience!  Where did you get yours? What plan you are on? And of course, initial user impressions and reviews  Smile

For some reason Apple is not currently selling them online but there is a link to find iPad Authorised Resellers which include Magnum Mac, DSE, Harvey Norman and JB Hi Fi.

This is quite odd and there's no reference to the wifi only model. The site does say that the iPad is now available for sale.

While my iPhone 4 has a smaller screen, and has a call-end button on the side of it, it has 2x the Ram of the iPad.

The iPad has only 256mb of Ram, which puts me right off, they are trying to sell a "Internet Tablet" with very little ram. I don't expect to see Multitasking on the iPhone 4's level, nor do I see it being supported for very long.

In saying that, I am happy with my iPhone 4, I got the thing for free, and even though I am a Android User / Admirer I will be using my iPhone for at least a couple of weeks.

The iPad needs a bit of catching up, while it has a 1GHz CPU and decent Graphics, it's let down by the amount of ram. To be honest I would rather invest this money in a nice Netbook, which is user-upgradeable to a degree and if you so desire can run OSX.

Edit: < /rant > is not a valid HTML tag, so the editor decided to remove it anyway.

I'm sitting outside MagnumMac on Moorhouse Ave, Christchurch right now (tethered through my iphone on XT 500MB plan). I got here at 6am and was only the second to arrive - the one guy who got here first was here at 5.30. So far, at 6:55, there are only the three of us.

The store has big ads for the iPad on the walls and a display already set up inside with 4 iPads clearly visible through the window. Looks like maybe I could have slept in another hour or two, hehe : )

Waiting outside Noel leeming Wellington. A couple of crude iPad signs outside and what look like all their staff inside.

They were putting the signs up at 8pm last nite and I was suprised there was noone there then.

Got mine in Aus and had the pleasure of using this thing for 3 or 4 weeks now - they are awesome for sitting on the couch, checking emails, facebook, twitter etc and some of the games are quite addictive.

Top 5 must have apps for any new users:

1/. Angry Birds
2/. NZ Herald (best news app of the lot I think, better than BBC and NY Times)
3/. Flipboard
4/. MobileRSS HD
5/. Twitterific

Cheers
Andrew

Which is why Ill wait till the 2nd generation iPad comes out... Ive never had anything "new" as such, and its probably a good thing :) Let everyone else find the problems first ;)

Went into Harvey Norman on Tory St. Real simple, in and out quickly. Can't wait to unbox this thing after class.

If you want one and you're in Wellington then I suggest getting down to JB Hifi ASAP. Apparently most people didn't realise that they opened at 8am this morning so there is no queueing and all models are in stock but that won't last for long.

Got mine when I was in the US, haven't had the need to use 3g but will start looking at what the plans are.

Dick Smith had Vodafone MicroSims in boxes ready to go I'm not sure if they were charging for them though.

That really is strange - hope there are some left in the stores at lunch time in Wellington.  I only want the 16G wifi model.  We were in the US a few weeks ago and all they had in all the stores we visited there were either none or the high end models with 3G.
