Hey guys,

Short time reader, first time poster.

So, I've ordered my iPhone 4 (two weeks down, one to go!) and while I'm painfully waiting for it to ship, I've decided to buy myself a nice case/sleeve.

After looking around for quite a while, I'm finding it a bit difficult to find something I like.

First of all, I can't decide what's better - a sleeve or a case. I've always liked the idea of having a good leather sleeve, and keeping the iPhone naked, but I somewhat fear the whole 'antennagate' thing. On top of that, I can't find any nice ones.

I'm also happy to get a good looking/tight fitting case, but then I'm worried about the screen being vulnerable in my pocket.

So my questions to you all are:

  • What do you prefer?

  • What do you have?

  • How do you rate it?

  • Where did you purchase it?

Also, while I'm here, who else is enduring the agonizing wait? I think I'd find comfort knowing others are suffering too. :D

Thanks muchly!

I've had my iPhone 4 since it was released here. I prefer sleeves and a naked iPhone as I think buying such a beautiful device and then covering it in some ugly plastic/rubber is a travesty.

I bought an "iPhone Smart Case" from SFBags.com (http://www.sfbags.com/products/iphone-cases/smartcase-iphone.php). Previously I bought one of their Suede Jackets for my iPhone 3G 2 years ago and it was great the whole time. The smart case is even better as it's quite thick and padded with leather trim and pocket. Only negative thing I can say about it is that it is quite large so if you're not used to carrying around huge things in your pocket don't buy it!

I'm not affiliated in any way with SFBags, they are just a great company I found 2 years ago after not being able to find a good sleeve in NZ. They have great service and even emailed me saying they found a way to shave $10 off the shipping charges and refunded the money to my credit card.

Ikonic Edge do a really nice leather sleeve. I've ordered one for my phone having seen one that my friend uses; perfect for the pocket awesome protection for the phone and the phone is in all its glory whilst you're using it, rather than being covered up. I've also ordered a bumper from apple.

This solution may not be for everyone but i really like Gelaskins basically its a really thin stick on skin for the back and on the iPhone 4 the sides and the top and bottom of the front. This should keep minor scratches from nicking the back and the side of the phone however it will not protect your phone if you drop it or putting something like a key into your pocket.

If you look after your phone then you should consider them as they have a catalog of great artwork and you can make your own skin with your own image i have one on my 3g(Still waiting for my iPhone 4 to ship) and love it. i have used cases which all 3 of them broke i have left my iphone nude which left a tone of mini scratches on the back just from usual wear and tear. i ended up getting a Gelaskin which went on with no issues what so ever and have not taken it off since and it even works with the iphone dock

It might not be for you but it's worth considering

Some cases causes issues when taking photos with flash. Do you guys encounter this issue with any of the cases you have tried?

I got one from JB Hi Fi and had the problem, and returned it promptly. It was the Belkin Grip Vue Clear.

Thanks for all the great replies!

Of all the options out there, I think a nice Iconic Edge leather sleeve is my best bet.

I very much like those Element Cases, but I feel that its not enough protection. That and a sleeve, maybe, but then that might be getting a bit excessive, haha.

SFBags also have a very nice sleeve, but I think its just a little on the bulky side for what I'm after.

The winner:

This is my first smart phone, so excitement is high.

I just wish they'd hurry up and ship it!

I would check the video review on this case before buying, i really watned one and then i saw the stuff on Youtube.

And avoid any Cygnett, silicon cases, they are awful.

and dont forget to get your free apple one.

Yea I asked to try a Cygnett skin and said no thanks. I got a speck pixel hd from the case program. I have a candyshell on my iPod touch and it's great. I am going to look for a nice case today. Then when I get back home on Tuesday will order something online. Far more selection over seas

I'd say get an invisible shield and a free case from Apple.

That way you have a choice of going "naked" with protection or something else if you wanna be different.

hm... im using the zagg invisibleshield on my iphone 4 at the moment and yes the reception issue is very real but you just kinda avoid the spot and i havent run into any problems to date.

the zagg shield is actually as good as it claims - we tried scratching ti with our keys and within a few minutes you wudnt have known it had been scratched. def has the healing properties. very worth the money paid for it... alot of my friends dont even notice that i have a "skin" on it. clarity is amazing, not sh*tty like some screen protectors which give ur screen a sort of rainbow effect on white pages... no problems with feel - i guess u get used to it very quickly.

i myself prefer a TPU style case as it is sort of a middle ground between silicon + hard polycarbonate cases. has stiffness of hard cases + cushioning properties of silicon - i ordered the pixelskin HD from apple which has a ridiculous 6-8week shipping by the way -_- sept 28 sigh... oh well...

but tbh i will probably keep using it naked as i quite enjoy it that way. maybe pick up a incipio feather case later on in its life? but we will see

Yea I bought the pixel skin myself from a vodafone store. I have the pixel skin HD coming from the case program. Will be looking at getting a candyshell soon.

I can't compare it to the 3GS as I only had a iPod touch previously. But I don't think it would be as bulky as a 3GS with a pixel skin on. I will see next week as my boss has a 3GS and has a silicone case on it.
