Since I'm on prepay, for the most part Cellular Data is disabled and I just use wifi.

I keep getting the annoying 'Cellular Data is turned off' warning messages however...  Is there any way to disable these messages?

I have the following set:

  • Enable 3G (off)

  • Cellular Data (off)

  • Internet Tethering (off)

  • VPN (Not Connected)

  • Wi-Fi (Not Connected)

Hi,
Sorry, I'm not sure, but I don't think you can disable that warning - it's telling you that you're done something or are in an app that requires data.... but I'm curious as to why you've disabled 3G? I guess you're on 2degrees or VF, so you'll be connected via 2G cell sites, but I would think that you'd really be wanting 3G for calls & texting too...?

Cheers,
Mike

I just disabled 3G to see if it made any difference to the messages, which it didn't.

I'll get that message in the middle of typing an SMS.

Am on VF prepay

I'm on VF prepay as well with the same settings you listed. I don't get that message. Do you have location set to off? Maybe it's trying to locate you ... and needs data to do it? Just guessing.

Edit: I have three g turned off too to save on battery power. Doesn't seem to make any difference to the texts for me either.

Does anyone know the deal with vodafone data on prepay?

I don't seem to be being charged, however got this message today

"At 08:58 18-09-2010 u reached yr 10MB daily allowance.Extra data costs 1dollar/MB.Data resets at midnite or when u logoff after midnite.T&C at vodafone.co.nz"

Does 10mb a day come for free on prepay?

I suspect it's a AT&T thing as they require a mandatory data plan with the iPhone so they would instruct Apple to add this warning as they don't want you bypassing their data would they??

That's ridiculous. We are in nz not USA. Still getting warnings with location turned off also

If you're getting that message it means your iPhone is trying to connect to the net and because you have all the various methods of connecting disabled it is letting you know that it can't do it. The iPhone is designed to be always connected so you're using it in a way that 99% of iPhone users wouldn't. Do you have your email set to push or to check for new mail periodically?
That would be just one of dozens of possible explanations for why you might be seeing this message.

Also free apps eat up your data with the advertising embedded in them
so one of them may be trying to access the net

Maybe,  but AT&T has a lot of say in what Apple does with iPhone software.  Remember last year when AT&T didn't want tethering on the iPhone and the next release of iPhone software disabled tethering world wide.  It wasn't until the next release that it go restored again no dobt after the rest of the world complaining..
