I have a friend who just picked up an Iphone4 and we wanted to try out Facetime. But have been getting error messages when we try;

'user is not available for Facetime' -or similar

We are on different networks (Vodafone and 2 Degrees) so I don't know if that is an issue.

Anyone been able to make this work ?

I've called 2degrees to Vodafone no issue. You are both connected to wifi at the time yes? FaceTime requires an active wifi connection . . .

Check your router (at home) settings, there are three ports that need to be open. Not sure where it is, but there is a thread about this on the Apple.com forums.
