My husband got an iphone in early September.  He has a 200mb data plan.  In his first month he used a little over 100mb of his data plan.  He is about 10 days into his second month and he received a text today from AT&T that he has used 181mb of his 200mb plan.  He said he hasn't done anything differently in the past 10 days vs the first month.  Why has he used 181mb of data?  What needs to be turned off on his iphone so it doesn't continue to use his data plan when he isn't using the phone?

Thanks!

To limit data usage you can turn off 3G, notifications, and setting 'Push' to off under the 'Fetch New Data' setting, as well as setting 'Fetch' to manual (for checking email). Try to use Wi-Fi as much as possible as well.

You can also turn off data completely by going to Settings>General>Network then set 'Cellular Data' to off.

I'd be wanting to know why the data usage is so high rather than just resorting to switching it off.

Does your network provide a 2G service ? Turning off 3G could result in no service/reception at all.

Just a guess. It could be that he didn't exit his apps properly and they might still be running in the background, refreshing themselves therefore consuming data. This recently happened to one of my friends. Get him to hold down the menu key on his Iphone for a few seconds, a list of currently running apps should appear, you can close them from there.

I believe TheLastLemming is correct and my husband has not been properly exiting the apps and they continued to run in the background using valuable data.  He is taking private pilot lessons and most of the apps he has added to his iphone are weather related.  These apps tend to frequently update.  Thanks to the wise people on this forum he now knows how to turn programs off and he is much more careful about closing apps after he uses them.

He switched from T-Mobile to AT&T last month when he got his new iPhone 3G  S⃣ .  I will switch to AT&T from T-Mobile in January after my T-Mobile contract expires.  I do not know if AT&T has a 2G network.
