I have been using an iPad for 2 months which came with a vodafone microsim and I have been pre paying as I go. On the morning of the 31st December I was checking the marine forecast and I couldn't get any data. As vodafone network is not very strong where I live I decided to just try again later. Next day I realized that I couldn't access my emails or Internet. I've tried restarting and resetting the iPad but no change. Am using it now in the local library over their wifi network but still nothing happening with 3G. Could the sim be playing up. Is it a vodafone problem or iPad problem. Could not connect to server is the error message.

So there's more info now.

Check the APN settings of the iPad thing, I don't know where to find this since I don't approve the use of any Apple Products, maybe somebody else can help you :)

BTW, Welcome to Geekzone!

This guide is for the iPhone, but as they are both iOS based devices, hopefully it should lead you in the right direction on the iPad.

Questioning the obvious here, but did you check to make sure you had enough credit available to start a data session?

Thanks for responses.  I've now left the library and I'm on an incredibly slow and shaky Telecom mobile broadband connection on my PC. Being rural has its disadvantages. Yes I had thought that maybe I had run out of credit but I can't believe it would just run out and not give me any means of topping up.  There is a 'my vodafone app' that tells me the status of credit and usage etc but I can't access that cos I can't link the ipad to the internet. Surely vodafone don't want to just have customers 'drop off' without encouraging them to spend more?  Or am I being naive?  Anyway the customer service line should be open today - so I'm calling them now.  Cheers

Have just rung vodafone customer service. Had opened my ipad to give them details and told them I couldn't access 'my vodafone' data where i would normally top up credit. They looked at my account and confirmed that I was out of credit - but it always leaves 0.01 cents so that credit can be renewed. While they were telling me that I went into 'My vodafone' and lo and behold the account information was there and i was able to top up and now I have access to the Internet again!. Customer services say they didn't do anything. She said the network is always overly full at this time of year ..... but 4 days of no access ....
So I don't know why it stopped or why it started again but can advise others if need be which library to go and sit in and how to hold their tongue in just the right way. Cheers
