Hi guys,

I have just upgraded to 4.2.1 on my 16gb 3g iphone (living in the past, i know).

I have noticed that some people who have upgraded to this software, not necessarily only iphone 4 owners, were able to have a grey background on their home screen (my mate who has a 3gs had this feature).

I can't seem to find where in settings to apply this feature. Any help at all would be appreciated. It might be a case of 3g not being able to do this.

Cheers
EJB

The 3G does not get wallpapers without a jailbreak. C'est la vie. That nifty update along with a handful of others, like multitasking, only work on the 3GS and iPhone 4 models.

You can't, it's not available on the 3G, only on the 3GS and 4.

This link has a list of what does and doesn't work with iOS4, specific to the iPhone 3G:

I'm still running 3.0.1 on my 3G. I use mostly email and maps so not worried about security much. Didn't find any convincing reasons to upgrade the os from here, and saw lots of posts about upgrade failure and slow ui response. Also, I think tether was still working in 3.0.1, and was on and off in future releases (tho I never used it more than a couple of times I think).

What is your feeling about 4.x.x ios releases on your 3g in terms of ui response and other things?

If you were running 3.0.1, would you miss anything?

Thanks for the clarification guys. Bit of a shame really. I was looking forward to that feature.

Otherwise i feel that the update was worth it. Aside from being able to download apps that i previously could not. I also really like the new mail feature and the inbox for all accounts, very handy.

The other development i've noticed since updating is that my phone is now goes through the juice like crazy..

I used to be able to get about 2-2 1/2 days life out of a full battery, now i'm getting 1-1 1/2 days battery life max, no increase in usage either

Every now and again my 3G (@3.0.1) gets incredibly hot and stays hot - after very short data use like a google map lookup. I restart it and it is resolved. I imagine additional power is being used, but I have never wanted to leave it turned on in this condition to find out.

Try turning off spotlight. That can chew though the battery.

Because you have a 3g you can roll back to older firmware
