So I'm thinking about getting a cable that allows me to hook up my iphone 3gs to my tv via the rca sockets. Im thinking of a cable something like this TradeMe

I have the air video app on my iphone so I can stream video to it and the idea is that I can display it on my tv so that when I watch movies, I dont have to hook up my laptop to it (which is a bit of a hassle).

Will the actual display / resolution still be ok when outputting from the iphone or is this generally a bad idea? Anyone tried this and what results did you get?

Its composite video, it will look crap. Trust apple to only give you a choise of a few obsolete video formats from their devices since they are really a media company these days.

There are component cables available which will be much better. Composite video is best left to VHS players and laserdisc etc. Digital media should never go near a grotty compromise format like it.

Also there are still cables being sold that do not have the chip in them to actually work with anything slightly recent.

is this what I want then do you think? Will it be watchable from iphone to tv (TV is only 32" and not proper HD if it matters)

It will still only be SD, but some iPhones will do progressive output which eliminates deinterlacing from buggering up the picture when things move. It can end up looking alright depending on your source.

Some decent docks have the ability to output (SD) video without paying heaps too...

Just a thought!
