Finally, Apple now sells the iPhone 4 unlocked in the US.

Pricing (before tax):

16GB: US$649 (NZ$792 approx.)
32GB: US$749 (NZ$915 approx.)

I don't really keep up with all things Apple but that's a nice ~$400 NZD difference to the price of the iPhone 4 in the apple nz store.

The US sales tax rate depends on which state I presume?

This, along with Vodafone NZ recently reducing their contract subsidy and the success of the iPad, suggest that Apple is becoming more carrier agnostic. This can only be a good thing in my view, as it gives consumers greater freedom to select a telco that suits their needs.

Hopefully it may eventually bring down the exorbitant price that contract-free purchasers are subjected to in NZ, and make contract-free iPhones available in major retail stores.

Given the poor reliability of SMS I think that iMessage is a fantastic feature on the face of it, but unfortunately very few of my contacts have iOS devices so it could be a while before it's really useful.

Contract free iPhones have been available in at least one major retailer for a while. I got my iPhone 4 off contract from Noel Leeming back in February.
