My wife and I each have an iPhone, and hardly ever use 3G. Occasionally, however, we end up going way over out 200MB per month quota. When it happens, the big data usage is always on the 26th or 27th of the month, between 5:30m and 6:30pm, when we're not at home!

It's very odd. We don't watch video or do big downloads when we're not on wifi.

What could we be doing (or neglecting to do) to use 167MB in 25 minutes without even realising?!

I presume the date and time thing is coincidence. But maybe not?

Any updates via the AppStore? Do you use any mapping or gps apps that might be updating maps? Is email setup on the iphones?

not super familiar with iPhones, but could you toggle 3G off over the offending period and see if any apps complain?

I think we started updating apps over home wifi and then left to go out. I guess the updating kept on going. Damn!

Yep, that'll do it!  Because my monthly data is quite meagre (100MB) I don't use the 'prefer wifi' option, I physically toggle 3G off and only turn it on when I am out and want to use it.  Continuous 3G is fine if you have 1GB+ and a decent capacity battery, I have neither.

Speaking as someone with 1GB+, I assure you that it doesn't cut the mustard these days.  If I could tether my iPad with the 3GB you can get from Vodafone, I'd be all over that.  Alas, I'm stuck with 1GB on XT.

Not at the speeds you get tethering the iPad on VF. Someone here said it was a known problem, either way, I stuck with VF because of the 3GB data thinking it would be excellent for the iPad. Definitely isn't at present.

Hmm

I let 3G stay on all of the time, and wifi. I don't have any battery or usage issues. I have most notifications off, and no push email. I did go thru a period of hardly using anything web while on 3G, and in that 2 or 3 week period the usage was 7Mb, so that shows that there is no leak, at least for me.

Maybe you can test with turning of some things and noting the effect?

Yes. but there is also an option to turn off data, not just 3G.

IF its to do with App Store updates, turn off the cellular data option under settings/app store.

I've never had this problem. Basically means that only over wifi will my updates download.

Just a suggestion
