Ok, I'll do this in bullet points:

-Thought iPhone 4s wouldn't be coming to NZ (because I followed apples launch announcement)
-Got my uncle in AU to get me one and send it over
-Cost heaps to send here
-Cost heaps of GST when it arrived
-Have had the phone for a couple of weeks and it's awesome but I noticed the home-button is a couple of degrees out of alignment and it annoys the hell out of me.
-I've got apple in AU to accept it back (and offer a refund back to my uncle) direct from me, and they're paying for the return postage and arranging pickup which is happening tomorrow morning.

My question is: Will I be able to claim back the GST I paid to DHL, and if so what proof do I need to supply them with to prove that I have sent the faulty phone back?

(GST+fees came to over $170)

Thanks
:)

I believe the answer is not unless you are GST registered. That's the downside to importing personal stuff.... sorry.

As above. And you wouldn't claim it from DHL, but New Zealand customs.

I once had some laptops sent here for review, paid the GST and when sending back claimed that GST as credit. But again, being a company and all...

Taken from customs.govt.nz:

Refunds of Duty and GST for private importers:

Your can apply for a refund of duty and GST when:

duty is paid in error
a concession is later approved for the goods
the goods are of faulty manufacture
the goods were in a damaged or deteriorated condition prior to leaving Customs' control
the goods were destroyed, pillaged or lost prior to leaving Customs' control.
Contact your local Customs office to apply for a refund, and make sure you have evidence to support your application.

Confuses the heck out of me, but it looks like I should be able to if I can give them proof?

Well:

Customs said I can get the get back if I provide:
Receipt for paying get in the first place.
Proof from shipping company that I sent it back.
Proof that the money has been refunded.

I'll have all of these in my email within the next week so woohoo!

That's a surprisingly good outcome.

I wouldnever have banked on you getting your $ back from them.

Dare I say it, they have now set a prescedent?

Given that it is written in black and white on their website,

I suspect it is a a simply (word used loosely as we are describing government bureaucracy)  matter of course issue for them rather than a judgement on each situation..
