hey there,

i bought my iPhone4 8gb about 3 weeks ago.

I'm trying to sell it because I didn't know 4S would be so cheap.

It's wayyy cheaper than what I had paid for my iphone4.

I'm currently trying to liquify it to get the new 4S. I bought it for $800 (with 2 year contract), and I am trying to sell it for $800 (plus casing and protective film).

Vodafone store says iPhone4 8gb with no contract is $899, so I thought my iPhone would sell pretty quicky.. but no........

what should i do

If the iPhone4s is so much cheaper on a plan, why would anyone buy a low capacity iPhone4 for $800 (also, if they wanted an iPhone4 8Gb, they may be willing to pay the extra $99 to get a warranty - I would).

The only way you will shift it is by selling it at the same price as others - check trademe.

if it can be bought brand new with warranty for $899, who is going to pay $800 for a second hand, potentially broken, phone.

have a look on trademe and see how much they are selling for (not how much people are asking, but how much people are actually paying)

Advice? How about 'Don't get yourself locked into a 2 year contract, because it's NOT actually cheaper'?

What I'm saying is not 'don't go on account' I'm saying, don't be locked in for 2 years. You will end up paying more in the long run. And when the next shiny comes along, you'll have X months left on your contract or be forced to shell out $Y bazillion to break it.

I have 2 4Ses waiting for me and my wife in Sydney when we go over to visit my parents for Christmas. Paid full price direct from Apple. Better in the long run.

Anyway, about your original question - they seem to be selling for as low as ~$540. Expect that price to plummet as more enter the market after people buy 4Ses.

Ahhh okay, I understand what you mean now.

This is my first time buying a *proper* phone, so I guess I'm making a lot of mistakes..

Well never gonna repeat this.. Thanks for your word.

Nothing wrong with going on contract if the subsidy is right. Looks to me like you went on contract for the iphone 4 but didn?t really get any sort of sizable subsidy for it. Which sucks.

If you are happy to ‘only’ upgrade your phone every two years, and will be paying $x per month and won’t be switching providers regardless of whether you have a contract or not, then a contract makes sense. (since the subsidy is like a bonus)

Don’t buy an artificially high plan to get a better subsidy though – it almost certainly isn’t worth it. and don’t contract if you think your usage will change much, or if you might want to switch proividers.

I sold my 4 32Gb for $700 could have held out for $800.

I tend to disagree a little with SaltyNZ. I was going to buy my 4S outright but chose to get the $80 plan $449 outlay on 2 year contract. I am effectively paying $80 a month and getting the $1349 phone for $1020. Or paying $1349 and getting the $80 plan for $43.

The key for me is that the contract is on the simcard not the phone. And at Telecom, I can change plans on this contract as long as I stay in the same Tier. So I can get a different plan, or a better plan when that comes along, within my contract.

Put it on Trade Me with good photos for $1 reserve and watch the monkeys go mad and bid the price sky high.

You laugh but you know it's true :D

It's not something I'd try with some obscure piece of technical gear but an iPhone 4 will have them drooling.

When I worked for Vodafone, I once saw the security footage of a couple of f'wits ram-raiding the test centre and loading up their car with about 5 big boxes labelled 'Nokia' on the side.

It made us giggle to imagine them taking those home thinking 'SCOOOOOORE!!!' and then opening them to find... spare BTS radio cards.

Worth a metric butt-load more than 5 boxes of phones. But not likely to fetch a high price on Trademe.

ETF's and contracts are fine if you buy right, I got my sgs2 on vf and now the wife's 4s on XT. In both cases even if we had to buy our way out the total cost is less than the cost of no contract and buying the same hardware outright

Second this approach; $1 reserve and a well written ad is your best bet.
