My itunes folder is in a bit of a state with quite a few duplicates and some issues also on my iphone end.

Has anyone any ideas on how to tidy this up?

In iTunes go into File, Then Show Duplicates. I assume it'd be the same on Mac if you're using that. Is duplicate music the only issue?

[edit]: Forgot to say, once you show duplicates, go through and delete one of each. It takes time but you'll get into a pattern eventually. haha

They actually appear to be duplicate whole albums.

I find if I drop a new folder of mp3s into iTunes that it will duplicate all the tracks, IF there is a .m3u playlist file also in the folder.

Just something to look out for, saves having to then immediately do and delete a bunch of dupes!

You have to be careful, as iTunes is a database and runs on links to files.

This means sometimes you can have duplicate entries in itunes to the same file, or, duplicate entries and files.

This is generally an issue if your reencode stuff.

One really good thing I have been doing for some time, is creating a playlist of unrated songs (smart playlist), and listening to it to rate the songs (using the star system).

There is also another awesome field now in itunes which indicates when the song was last skipped. You add this variable to your playlist and then exclude all those that have been skipped in the past eg. 3 months.
