Looking at one for my Parents in law.  They currently have ClearNet Dialup, pay as you go ($2 an hour I think).  Which is never used - ever.

So looking for a really cheap prepay internet solution for them.

Is there anything?  Should I just get them the 3g iPad and using any of the 3 telcos for their casual data rates?

Are there any other options I could be looking at? Any ISP with a 1 gb plan or something? or prepay type deal?

If you are in a 2degrees broadband zone, then their pricing is attractive. I set up one for my aunt as a dial up replacement, but I have had a few hassles with the data not auto renewing correctly.

So you just rely on auto renew and auto top up?

I've thought 2deg an start them off on the casual rate and if usage increases then get the 1gb plan.

How can you top up? Always via web site? Nothing on the iPad directly?

Yep autorenew and autotopup. Thought it would work out really well with little intervention on my part, but I have had problems with the autorenew.

+1 2degrees if you're in the zone. The 1GB for $20 is what we use, is all good, fast.
Not has any problems with auto renew and auto topup.

Def don't use the casual data, at v least buy the 100 mb for $10.

Cheers,
Joseph

$20 will also get you 250MB on Vodafone, and $50 will get you 3GB.  So if not in the zone, that might not be a bad option.

I agree with others who have suggested that 2degrees is a good option with their temporamental billing being a major caveat.

You really need to watch like a hawk to ensure that they're auto renewing data packs and drawing down your credit correctly and for technophobe users this could be a deal breaker unless you are willing to monitor it for them.

The auto top-up feature seems to be reliable so it's a great help for anyone whose spend is reasonably consistent from month to month. They don't have an iPad app as such, but their web based portal is pretty good for providing information about account status and usage history.
