Unless you are buying imported handsets, you wouldn't need to unlock an iPhone bought in New Zealand - those sold through Vodafone, Telecom and directly from Apple are all unlocked.

Hi - most people find the process of Jailbreaking fairly easy. There are a few different methods to get your head around, some files to download and processes to follow.... I've found the site iclarified.com to be really helpful - from the homepage click on the 'jailbreak' section of the red badge at the top left of the page & then follow the options depending on your device/OS/etc.
Best to try & find out from the seller of any iPhone whether it was purchased in NZ or overseas, and if from overseas whether it does or doesn't require a Jailbreak/unlock (not all of them do). I don't think there's a simple way of determining this straight off. Good luck & have fun.

I jail broke my 3GS which is running iOS 5 but it got quite laggy whih I found frustrating & ended up going back to factory settings. But at least it's easy to jailbreak & even easier to revert if you don't like it.

jailbreaking is easy to do but if you can unlock iOS 5 there seems to be alot of problems with the unlock method...
the new Gevey sim which is thought to be released shortly will be the way to go ! :)
