It's unrealistic for a 1080p TV when you can get a 4K 65" for similar pricing on special.

The price may need a bit of tweaking, but hopefully it'll sell if you can get a buyer who knows their stuff.

We are thinking of upgrading our 50" Panasonic plasma with a 4K OLED telly. But instead of selling that, we'll probably be selling the 4K LG LCD telly we have upstairs, as the Panny has a vastly superior picture in terms of colour reproduction, ability to handle movement in scenes, and viewing angle.

And depending on how far you sit from the telly, 1080p vs 4K can become a non-issue.

A good plan, and one I'd wished we'd followed. Replacing the plasma with an OLED simply exacerbated the quality difference between the new TV and the 4K LG LCD we kept.

Wow, so many replies! Thanks all!

So I have listed it on Trademe, will see what happens.  Hopefully someone who appreciates / wants a panel with a better PQ than an LED will see it.  Failing that I will have to see if I can make it fit, although I do also have my Kef XQ floor-standing speakers to fit in, so it might be a choice between decent speakers and a 50" 4K LCD, or a 65" Plasma with a crappy soundbar.  Tough choices!

I'll be surprised if someone's willing to pay $800, and if you really want to sell it I'd suggest setting a more realistic price. But I guess that's still a relative bargain compared to the $925 someone else wants for a 55" VT!

So in your opinion the OLED WAS an upgrade from the plasma? I've been holding off upgrading this sucker so long for fear of ending up with one that has a technically higher resolution and overall wider colour palate, but in reality has a lower quality viewing experience.

But now that OLEDs are starting to drop in price a bit, it may be time to reconsider. And they do tend to review well.

Although the model I've set my sights on (55" LG CX series) is now proving hard to get, and the prices are rising where it is available (makes sense, due to its scarcity). I was unable to get the Minister of Finance's sign-off when it was on sale recently for $3300 <sadface>

OFMG was it worth it. There is not a single thing I miss about the plasma compared to the OLED; only regrets are not having done it sooner and (as above) selling the plasma instead of the LCD.

Have you taken your SO to view the TVs? That helped me sell it before we bought. My partner, who normally doesn't care nearly so much about these kinds of things, was gob-smacked by the image and viewing experience when we replaced the plasma with the OLED, and continues to be impressed. (That said, the experience soon becomes the norm... it's when watching stuff on the LCD I'm reminded!)

Prices as well as availability of OLEDs aren't particularly flash this year - we paid $3400 for the 65" Panasonic GZ1000U at the beginning of the year. Personally, if not a too dissimilar price I'd elect for the 40% larger picture of a 65 over a 55 (given, basically, there probably are few if any bad OLEDs), but I get other factors like brand, space, HDCP etc matter for others...

My disadvantage there is that she recently got a pair of glasses for the first time, and watching the TV with these on gave her a significant resolution upgrade. So she is not really on board with a TV upgrade at this stage, as she's effectively just received one. :-)

As to my TV choice, my decision is being largely driven by the incoming PS5, and the LG OLEDs seem to be the only ones currently on the market that offer the full HDMI 2.1 feature set that PS5 has support for. But due to the CX looking to be pretty much unavailable in the country right now, perhaps I need to reconsider. Or simply wait until it comes back in stock AND the prices drop down from its stupid $4600 RRP (or until other manufacturers up their game with HDMI 2.1 support). It was a real eye opener seeing the price of this telly bounce around so much while monitoring it over the course of the last few weeks.

The corner where our telly goes currently has a 50" model there, and that only just fits. I think I'll squeeze a 55" OLED there, due to thinner bezels, but anything bigger than that and we'll have a bit of a problem, I think. I'd have to move one of my front floor standing speakers to a position that would put it too close to our gas fireplace, which will be a problem in winter.

Not to discourage, but I'd suggest bringing the conversation over to the existing thread in HT and stop pulling poor timbosan's sale further off track

LOL! Honestly I am not that worried, besides it gives this thread more visibility :-)

And some of the content is to the point - what do I do with a Plasma TV? Sell it now and move on (and get to keep my decent HT audio setup) or keep it and move from a 5.1 set up a soundbar.  I am leaning towards the former, and then I can upgrade to an OLED later.  At least this way I will have the audio system to drown out my sorrows!!!!!  And I will have cash to get a XBox Series X. Win!!!

Fair call. Ewwww... a soundbar... no, definitely the former. If a 55" will fit, keep the audio and bide your time until you can get a nice OLED. I don't think the sales are gonna be as sweet this year with all the stock issues.

Yeah, going from a reasonably good audio setup (Rotel amp, Keg XQ speakers) to a soundbar would not be fun! And it's $$$ not well spent where as I already have a 4K LCD TV.

Re OLED I was looking at the Panasonic 55" HZ so may see what prices are liking on the Boxing Day sales (geez, that's only 7 weeks ago!).  One thing I realised about the Plasma is it's a big set - the borders are huge and modern LCD / OLED sets are way physically smaller for similar viewing size.

I too like Keg speakers, they sound better the more you use them haha. Rotel make some nice amps, I was looking longingly at the new Michi amps recently.

Yeah, packaging has gotten a lot thinner, especially with OLEDs, and will get even more so. Hell, for the princely sum of $87k USD, you could even have one that rolls down when you don't need it.

I would hope we see the 55" models ducking well under $3k soon, but these are not normal circumstances obviously. The 55" GZ1000 got as low as $2300 earlier this year though.

Yeah, when it's turned off our 65" OLED looks no bigger on the wall than the 60" plasma it replaced. Even more bulky was the 42" 720p plasma we had until a couple of years back, the bottom bezel of which was at least 15cm - the 55" LCD is not that much larger!

Congrats on the sale. That was QUICK! Decent price too. Happy for you, well other than downgrading to a smaller screen.

Did you see it go on Trademe?  Yeah, $700! I was quite surprised! But very happy actually, and I will cope with the smaller screen, might just get the XBox Series X now I have a 4K screen!

Also, please feel free to keep discussing the pros and cons of keeping / selling Plasma TV's!

Yip.

Only thing when things sell that fast I always second guess myself and wonder if it was under priced. A while since I've seen one go for that sort of price though.
