That looks like a pretty bloody good solution! Thanks!

Anyone else who has any ideas, please feel free to submit them.

theres 5 buck ones on dx.com

I use to turn on a light and other
things for years now.. no problem with
them.. the fit and rotate us and
aus plugs and uk ones.(90 to 240volts). all in one
but they dont have a ground
may not be technically legal?
as long as use them wisely and nothing
too much load should be fine

but can use any lesser used remote
button to learn.. you click and hold the
button stick on device and aim remote at it
until it flashes and remembers the code

heres a new one that works through walls

http://dx.com/p/rf-wireless-remote-control-ac-power-socket-ac-220v-500w-27126

heres the IR ones with learning function.
http://dx.com/p/ir-remote-controlled-ac-outlet-for-appliances-220v-12902

the pins rotate so fits us or aus wall socket but you still need a small
usa to aud adapter on device plug on

i think its 500watts max but some have more or less ratings

or just browser all

I think I will stick with the first one you showed me, seems more robust.

A few similar suggestions in this list.

Some of the home theatre standby eliminator type turn on using an existing tv/stereo remote.

The ones on DX work, they just do not comply with NZ requirements for safety/isolation. Just like LED string lights sold on TradeMe (also available on DX). If/when there is a fire, there is a possibility your insurance will not pay out. They will be in their full right to refuse payout, but I have see an instance where they did pay because the customer would have had no idea the product (a decorated panel heater) did not comply on the inside wiring.

Maybe this

http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=MS6142&keywords=mains+control&form=KEYWORD

from Jaycar?

Wireless 3 Outlet Mains Controller

The ultimate accessory for the couch potato. No need to get up from the cricket when you need to turn the fan on. Simply plug in any mains appliance rated up to 10A and use the remote to turn each one on or off individually, or control all of them together. One of the outlets also has an LED night light that's also operated with the remote, so you can see where you're going if you have to get up during the night or keep a night light on for the kiddies, then turn it off after the boogyman has gone for the night. Not just for the bone lazy, it also has other real benefits for the elderly, disabled or for making sure the TV and other appliances are turned off at the mains before you go to bed.

• 433MHz
• Remote battery included
• 10A, 2400W rated
• Remote measures: 125(W) x 45(H) x 17(D)mm

That's why I will stick with this one:
