The drawback would be that it would sound bloody awful.

Assuming that you are intending to use this in a car, why don't you just bite the bullet and replace the deck with a $99 JVC mechless? (Or this http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/online-store/products/Sony-Mechless-USB-MP3-Player-DSXA35.aspx?pid=353893&menuFrom=100103#Cross)  Not that hard to put in and you'll be able plug USB keys loaded up with songs directly.
