I'm upgrading my workstation to X99 and wondering if there is anyone interested in the parts or full PC. If so, what do you reckon prices should be? Original was built in 2013 for around $6k & has run like a dream. Based near ChCh.

MB: Asus P9x79 WS

CPU: Xeon E5-2680 2.7 GHz (with stock cooler)

RAM: 32 GB ECC Kingston

If sold as full PC would include:

Case: Fractal Design Define XLR2 Full Tower

PS: Corsair HX650 V2 80+ Gold 650Watt

OS: Win 7 Pro (has had Win 10 installed and rolled back).

OS HD: Currently on Intel SSD 520 256 GB, but may go back to a HDD depending on feedback/price.

GPU: Nvida Quadro FX 1800

Edit - added GPU

Nokia 6110, 6210, 6234, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Huawei Ideos X5 (Windows Mobile), Samsung Galaxy SIII, LG G4, OnePlus 5, iPhone Xs Max (briefly), S21 Ultra. And I thought I hadn't had many phones - but the first one around 1997.

You're going to cry at what it's worth now, being a Xeon/Workstation they tend to tank in value fairly drastically, more so than gaming or mainstream PC's.

E5-2680 $175 landed from Ebay for a used but tested CPU.

Ram is NZD$310 new for 4x8gb Kingston ECC on Pricespy, normally I'd go with a rough 70% of new as the used value but ECC has a much more limited secondary market, so you might be struggling to get that.

Motherboard is harder, a few for stupid money on Ebay, last price on Pricespy was NZD$440 new, x99 equivalent is NZD$499 new. Again it's a nice bit of kit but more restricted secondary market, but better chance of getting 70% than the ram.

I'd be ballparking around $650 for the combo as a start point, but you might need to be prepared to drop it.

Values of other stuff:

Used cases are always fairly negligible, maybe $50-100.

PSU: ~70

OS: Virtually nil if OEM, and if its retail why would you sell it with the PC?

SSD: $60 (Brand new 240gb SSD's are sub $95 now)

Quadro 1800 - For anything other than specialist use, it's on par with Intel HD5000 for general/gaming performance, so virtually worthless except to the right person.

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply Lias. Well that's life I suppose, just as well it's a business PC! Yes the Win 7 is OEM, not much use in a different build.

Will do the rebuild in the existing case so MB, CPU & RAM will be available if anyone wants them.

Interesting that workstations drop much more than mainstream/gaming. The new build is using more mainstream components (the Xeons are just too expensive); MB: Asus X99-A II, CPU: i7- 6900 (Ouch!), so sale will possibly be easier in the future ( - haaa!). Still sticking with a Quadro GPU though.

Hey MartinGZ,

Can you check in the BIOS if the MOBO supports vt-d? I've checked ASUS' product page, and can't see anything definitive...

If it does, I might be interested in the CPU/MOBO/RAM combo, (and maybe the PSU), but probably have enough chassis lying around the house already to take the rest off your hands.

All I can see in the BIOS is VT-x, same in the manual. Don't know if that is of use to you st3.

It's because there is such a limited audience for them. Majority of businesses wouldn't buy a second hand workstation grade PC, and very few people other than a business need/want one.

PC gaming is a large (and growing by all accounts) market, and gamers short of cash are always on the scrounge for deals. Mainstream PC's aren't worth as much to begin with, so don't nosedive so much.

Hey, I might be interested in the CPU/board/RAM combo, $450?

That said, unless you have a specific need to upgrade, I'd probably suggest keeping it around rather than taking a massive bath for a small improvement in overall computing capacity. AMD Zen's going to come out in the next months, which should do some interesting things to the high-core-count market, so probably wait if you can.

yumcimil - I've PMed you.

Not expecting to see any real performance increase in the new system. It was a business decision to upgrade or get a new PC.
