My Meade 200mm (diameter of mirror) Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is not getting used as much as it should, so I'm looking for a good home. It comes with an LXD55 equatorial mount with Autostar. It has a lot of accessories, including eyepieces, diagonals, finders, cooling fans, a tripod and possibly a Samsung low-light SDC-453 camera.

This is not for the casual observer! These things are precision instruments and take some setting up and experience.
I'm flexible about the price - contact me if you are keen.

With luck, here is a picture of it (not on the tripod), before some of the modifications.

My question will identify me as a casual observer - but why does it need cooling fans?

Depending on how much of the accessories are wanted, somewhere between NZD1000 - 1500. But I'm open to discussion...

Two reasons: days being generally warmer than nights, it speeds up the settling time for the optics.
Also, air currents inside the tube can disturb the optical path, so a fan can be used to mix the air.

Location is near Blenheim. But I do travel about a bit - including to Auckland occasionally

Uhmm, purely out of interest, I'm not your buyer, but could you post some photos you've taken with this very cool machine?

I love this stuff, hubblesite.org set me off years ago.

I have the meade etx125, not as powerful as the one above but you can clearly see rings of saturn and jupiter .

It is really neat , but the self alignment stopped working so now I use 2 star alignment method.

I keep thinking I'd love a Telescope, but I have seen too many movies that start with someone casually looking out their telescope and finding an asteroid hurtling toward earth to cause an extinction level event, that no-one else has detected until it's too late so I think it's best for everyone I don't buy one :)

Sorry for the off topic :) It's a very cool bit of kit!

Well, I bought one back in August, off the back of advice received here on Geekzone; I got my boys a s/h 8" Dobsonian, which is currently doing a great job of taking up a big lump of space in our front foyer, given the few opportunities we got (or took?) to use it before daylight saving started. Now it's so light until later in the evening it's essentially useless when my youngest is typically in bed by 7pm.

The times we used it to view the moon were amazing, but I think it'll help if we got the help of someone who knew what they were doing to ensure we were getting the basics right - as finding stuff out there isn't easy, even with a type of scope that I understand is one of the easier to use.

If I struggle with the one I've got, I also don't think I should be in the market for such an advanced one as this!

Paid for and picked up from AJBW's travels in the North Island. A very happy purchaser. Thanks
