Hi All,

Just wondering what old processors people may have lying around as I have a 4670k that has probably failed. Could be the motherboard but I'm leaning towards the CPU.
Would prefer an i7 or similar i5.....or may just have to bite the bullet do that overdue upgrade.

Recommend checking TradeMe and Facebook Marketplace as well. Quite a few CPUs available at the moment, just depends on what you're willing to pay for one.

Been looking for a cheap i7 laptop cpu but no luck.

Yeah been looking at those too. With some of the pricing I may as well upgrade.

more likely the motherboard or some other issue - CPU's never just die.   They have to be fried electrically or thermally both of which would leave noticeable marks.  What are the symptoms?

Motherboard is a Z97 Maximus VII Gene.
Won't post and shows a 00 code (not used) with the led lit for a CPU error. Board lights up and CPU/system fans all start.
I have swapped the PSU out.
Removed RAM and alternated single sticks on slots.
Removed video card and tried IGP on 4570k.
Cleared CMOS and updated the BIOS.
Removed all from case to breadboard.

I'll pull the chip out and check for any visible damage. There was a small 200mhz overclock but the chip was slightly undervolted also.

Any ideas you have would be much appreciated.

Try booting with no RAM installed, I'm hoping your board has a little speaker on it? see if it beeps with no RAM installed, if it does that's a good sign if not that's bad (motherboard failed), also try powering the system down, unplug the power cord to the PSU and take the CMOS battery out, try to power the system to drain any remaining power and leave for a good 30 minutes, plug the CMOS battery in plug the power cord back into the PSU and boot the system to see.

As said by K8Toledo it is most likely the motherboard, it's extremely unlikely it's the CPU.

I would not consider Haswell K old considering Intel have milked the cow dry since Sandy Bridge with ~10% average gains.....

It's been a long time since I've come across an expired CPU, Pentium 4 days & even then it wasn't unexpected because of the ballistic overclocks available on unlocked units. I've seen no CPU failures in the Core processor range, ever.

Power surges are the most destructive cause of failure, but the surge is always swallowed by another component before it hits the processor. Smell testing will ID where that problem manifests, if you can't see the scorch flare. Burnt silicon stinks, must be worse than napalm because nobody loves the smell of burnt silicon in the morning. But as each system gets older by the day, I guess eventually some are going to collapse.
What's the PC used for? I'm with

JaseNZ here, upgrading to ex-lease is so cheap now. You can pick up a 6th gen SFF Dell or HP box, sure, it's a Belmont & definitely not a Statesman, but 6th gen for <$200 without looking too hard.

Edit: Formatting issue - posting from phone.

It's used for occasional gaming now as the kids and Mrs take up most of the time. I've smelt that smell before with a blown PSU many years ago, but unfortunately no smell or visible damage this time. No blown chips and no bulged caps either.
The plan had been to hold out for another few months and then get a new Mboard, CPU and Ram once the new models start arriving.

Tried taking the battery out but no change unfortunately. Tried removing RAM and trying a single stick, no luck.
No speaker unfortunately just the LEDs as it progresses through its checks. The order seems to be Sata, CPU, DRAM but doesn't make it past CPU.

Having some issues replying so just had to post this here.
Thanks for the replies all

If I can find a Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz Six Core (BX80648I75930K) Processor, I could sell you my i7 5820K :)

Unfortunately the general consensus here is that the motherboard has probably failed. Been trying to get my hands on a board to make sure the CPU is fine.
Thanks for the offer but need to confirm what's broken now.

yeah no prob, i would tend to agree. I cant think of a time over the last 20 years that ive had a cpu fail short of my own fault and over heating it
