Quick google search show that

  • It will accept up to 16GB (2 × 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1333 (PC3 10600) RAM
  • Does not support registered (buffered) modules. Using registered modules will result in the server failing to POST/boot. ('blue light').

Theres a big list of compatible ram you could use: https://n40l.fandom.com/wiki/Memory

If you want ECC ram, it looks like you need unbuffered. (https://www.compuram.biz/memory/hp-hpe/server/proliant/microserver/microserver-n40l/)

I purchased some 8GB PC3-12800E  ram on trademe a few months back that works fine.

A seller has some now for $40

Probably worth a punt.
