I am nearly ready to buy, this means I am still saving the money, but am wanting to find out if there are any out there and what they are going for so i know how much I need to allocate to this.

Just a small rack mounted server cabinet - preferably in Chch but will consider shipping from elsewhere.

Like I said I dont have the money as yet, but want to know what it will cost.

Cheers

Ok, this is my first foray into servers so Im not up with the specs.

I have seen small ones that look like the size of a couple of bread boxes, they have perspex front doors etc and are probably wall mountable but I would be sitting it under a bench or on top of the old fridge ion the garage or something.

The type of servers are the rack mountable type like HP DL360 etc.

Hope this helps and sorry for the lack of helpful info.

I've got one of these stored in Christchurch that I would be interested in selling

WARNING WARNING WARNING****

Make sure the depth of the cabinet is big enough for your server. Most are around 450mm deep and there are very few servers that short.

I'm having to replace our current server with a shorter one because we are moving to a 550mm deep wall mounted Dynamix cabinet for just this reason.

If you were in Auckland I know a place where you could get full size for less than $100. But would cost probably $1k to ship to Christchurch lol.

+1.

I have done this too, bought a server, thought it was so cool, then bought a rack cabinet, and whoops, it sticks out the back!

The other problem is that done rails like on the HP server I had are designed for rack with front and back mounting points of the right size - you can get around this with shelves but this reduces the number of servers you can get.

Most servers (on Trademe anyway) are 1U or 2U - this is the height and a cabinet is also measured in U - such as 9U (quite small) to 48U (over 6 ft tall).

I know that procase.co.nz do short depth rack mount cases that take standard ATX motherboards and can be mounted in any case with just the front bolts - no rear bolts are required.  Plus it's easier to get parts for a standard build-your-own PC than a name brand server (i know from experience when the fans in my HP died and it wouldn't even boot!).

Do let us know what you decide...

Well it is 850mm deep which heeds the above warnings of shallow racks.

Wanna go halfsies on it?
(im kidding - dont have use for half a server rack let alone a whole one!)

nickb800: Many magnitudes bigger

Thats dangerous language in Christchurch matey :)

Hmm you said that about 5 to 7 and at around 720 we had a 4.5.

Coincidence.... I think not!

This server cabinet is a conundrum though.

I have a server I am not using at the moment, but it isnt a rack mounted, its an ML350. Its for sale.

Now I want to buy not only a rackmounted but a case as well.

I must have rocks in my head!
