What type of tags? You get 125kHz, 134kHz, and ~13MHz to name a few. Then there is FSK and ASK, half duplex and full duplex, read-only and rewriteable.

What type of reader? Hand-held with LCD, PC interface, RS232 module, Bluetooth.

I actually don't know much about RFID so would appreciate some guidance.

Here's the scenario. At church, we want to mark attendance. As people leave, they drop their name badges into a box. After everyone has left, a worker collects the tags from the box and records them by hand.

What I was thinking was attaching rfid tags to the name badges. So the worker could just collect the tags, then dump them a dozen at a time onto the reader like you do in the Auckland libraries.

Is this possible to do cheaply? (We have people writing the software, just wondering about the hardware.)

I'm an electronic engineer at Tru-Test which has a significant international market share in RFID animal identification (and weighing scales and milk meters and electric fencing). I would recommend a barcode reader. Zero cost (apart from ~$50 reader in series with PC keyboard). Look for "code 39" font which is the only one I'm aware of where symbols are not affected by preceding symbols. There is a freeware TTF (true type font) available on the internet. It does numbers and letters, so you can print the member's name in barcode form.

It is hard to read multiple tags cheaply, unless you have the purchase volumes to bring the per-unit price down (like libraries). An intelligent reader module alone can easily cost $1000. Off-the-shelf readers are intended for reading single tags, most will not read multiple tags.

Churches also run Bible schools, music/performance events, mother groups, etc. I can not think of a situation where a normal church service requires members to wear name tags (except ushers etc.), I don't believe any church would go to that extend.

I too would recommend barcodes.

To keep costs down you would want to use a simple single tag reader.

But the read time is quick so you could 3-5 a second.
